I first got involved in what we called back then "ethnic" or "multicultural" marketing in 1993. Canada was experiencing a huge influx of immigrants from Hong Kong at the time and if my memory serves me correctly in a period of two years Canada received over 350,000 Hong Kong immigrants. It was a very exciting time. I had just graduated from Ryerson and at 23 years old I was one of the younger people to get involved in the whole multicultural advertising scene. It was dynamic, it was exciting and everybody wanted a piece of it. We had three major Chinese national newspapers and we even had a Chinese version of Toronto Life Magazine and a Chinese version of Maclean's Magazine. My agency at the time was fortunate enough to get involved with the launch of the Chinese version of AutoTrader and AutoMart magazines.
There were also a ton of ad agencies. Today only a handful of us still remain. All of us have become great friends and we're like a family.
One small operation which really stood out was Toronto TV, started by one of the hardest working people in media, Joseph Lau. Joseph immigrated from Hong Kong to Canada in 1991, got into the retail computer sales business, and then opened Toronto TV in the early 2000s. For anyone involved in the Chinese-Canadian scene here in the GTA, you will always recognize Joseph because he's there faithfully at every single event, documenting it with his video camera. Unrestricted by CRTC regulations, he was one of the very first to run a web TV station.
After several decades Joseph has decided to retire and move on to the next chapter of his life. To mark the closing and the winding down of Toronto TV he asked several friends from the community to conduct interviews—One in Mandarin. One in Cantonese. One in English
I have to say that I was very honoured when Joseph asked me to do the English interview, which we did today in my office. As soon as it is edited and ready for viewing I will be sure to post the link.
CONGRATULATIONS JOSEPH! On an incredible career in the Chinese-Canadian media scene. You were there at the beginning, the incredible middle part, and now the evolution of the next stage. You have left an incredible gift to Chinese Canadians and a legacy of content that can never be duplicated ever again.
