7 reasons why I think you shouldn’t skip programs (and 2 reasons why I think you should!)
1. If your guests are from different backgrounds, it’s so nice for them to be able to follow along and understand what’s happening. This is especially true for religious ceremonies and those with a lot of steps, traditions and ceremonies within ceremonies.
2. It’s a great way to celebrate your traditions. Even for guests within your same culture - many aren’t versed on the traditions and this is helpful! I’ve found that a lot of ceremony programs I do - I know more about what’s going to happen in their ceremony than even the couple does 😆 So just imagine how lost a guest may be that’s never been to a wedding before.
3. It gives guests something to do if you’re running a few minutes behind 🫣
4. Sometimes your officiant will require it. This is much more common with Catholic & Orthodox ceremonies. But always best to check with your officiant before skipping the program! We’ve had SO many week-of panicked phone calls when a couple realized 3 days out they need programs afterall.
5. If there are readings, hymns or other things you may want guests to be able to follow along to, this is a great place to put it!
6. It’s a place to include all the members of the wedding party (if you have one) so that guests know who is who.
7. And because always - If you love stationery, you’ll love a program! Guests DO keep these. How else do I have a mother of the bride showing up here for consults every couple of weeks with stacks of programs she’s been collecting?! 😆
Why would you NOT need a program?
1. Sometimes your officiant may request to NOT have programs. Ironically, this happens most with Catholic / Orthodox priests. Some say you must have one, others say you cannot have one. I always recommend checking with the church to see where your priest stands.
2. If budget simply won’t allow a program, then this is something to drop. However, there are digital options! Just keep in mind, it increases the chances of people having their phones out during the ceremony 😜
