🚀 Relaunching FreeClassifiedListings.com - After 23 Years, a Total Rebuild
About 23 years ago, I registered FreeClassifiedListings.com. Back then it was a simple experiment-an old-school classified site where people could post anything, and for a while it actually worked surprisingly well. Real people used it. Traffic was steady, and the community seemed to enjoy it.
But then the internet did what the internet does.
As the site grew, so did the number of bad actors. The spam started first, then the bots, then the automated scripts from all over the world. Eventually it devolved into the kind of content nobody wants to be responsible for hosting-prostitution, scams, drugs, p**n, you name it.
I didn't have the time or resources to moderate it properly. I tried delegating moderation to some of the heavy users, but that turned into its own drama-"god mode" egos, inconsistent enforcement, people overstepping boundaries. And even that didn't matter because the flood of automated submissions was overwhelming.
So I pulled the plug.
I shelved the whole project for years. The domain sat there collecting dust, and honestly, I assumed that was the end of it.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago...
I started experimenting with the newer wave of AI models.
They're cheap, fast, and capable enough now that the idea of real-time assisted moderation suddenly isn't a pipe dream anymore.
That got my gears turning.
For the first time, I could:
Automatically filter out spam before it ever goes live
Block scripted or foreign junk submissions instantly
Detect inappropriate content using AI + heuristics
Keep the site safe without needing a full-time moderation team
Build a lightweight, fast system (SQLite instead of bloated DBs)
Focus on UX and speed instead of constantly firefighting abuse
So I decided to rebuild the entire platform from scratch.
The New FreeClassifiedListings.com
It's cleaner, faster, mobile-friendly, and built with a simple philosophy:
"Free to use, easy to browse, no toxic junk."
I'm using modern AI (content classification, vector checks, language/state analysis, etc.) to keep the site clean without requiring heavy manual moderation.
I've also tried to keep the tech stack simple-no huge database overhead, no bloated frameworks-just a clean UI, a local SQLite database for efficiency on shared hosting, and a backend focused on speed.
The goal isn't to compete with Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji or Craigslist.
It's simply to bring back the nostalgia of the old classifieds era but with 2025-level protection against abuse.
Why I'm Posting This on FB
I know this community appreciates the "why" behind a project more than the marketing pitch. I'm not launching a startup or asking for money. I'm just reviving something that used to mean a lot to me, finally using the tools available today to keep it sustainable.
