YouTube just passed Netflix in average daily viewing time, and that is a bigger marketing story than it looks. New Digital i data says YouTube averaged 99.1 minutes per day per account in 2025, ahead of Netflix at 93.4 minutes, across 20 international markets. One of the clearest reasons is TV growth: YouTube’s share of viewing on TV screens rose from 28% to 35%.

That changes the way brands should think about attention. YouTube is no longer just a mobile or desktop platform. It is increasingly a living-room platform, which means creator content, organic video, repeatable series, and platform-native storytelling are taking a bigger share of the audience than many traditional marketers still realize. That is an inference from the reported viewing-time shift and TV-screen growth.

The bigger lesson for marketing in 2026 is that attention is moving toward content that feels native, endless, and easy to watch across every screen. Brands that still think in one-off ad campaigns are competing against ecosystems. Brands that understand creators, organic distribution, and how people actually consume content now have a much better chance of winning. This is an inference from the same viewing data and from Nielsen’s finding that YouTube also held the top spot in U.S. TV viewing share among media distributors, reaching 13.5% in March 2026.

Does this say more about YouTube getting stronger, or Netflix getting weaker?

The brands winning online are usually the ones that understand trends, internet culture, memes, and pop culture moments before everyone else.

That is exactly why the Backrooms trend worked so well. Minecraft felt built for it, IKEA already looked like it, Mountain Dew leaned into the chaos, and McDonald’s proved that even a simple idea can hit when the timing is right.

The lesson is bigger than one trend. If your brand understands what people are already watching, joking about, and sharing, your content has a way better chance of feeling relevant instead of random.
