In case you missed it, here’s an update on McRae Imaging USA!

The numbers are well up with divisional growth approaching an annual rate of 40% even though it’s been less than a year since McRae Imaging acquired a longstanding associate project partner, Advance Graphic Systems to create McRae Imaging USA. The Canadian corporation recognized the potential of the Michigan-based printing and fabricating company that has a respected specialization in interior graphics, signage and decor for big box retailers across the United States.

Several unique products added to the large palette of McRae’s Canadian operations deliver a comprehensive design approach for retailers across North America. The range now includes CoLite, a foam and vinyl structure product that replaces conventional wallboard construction for overhead and vertical components at a fraction of the cost and construction time. CoLite can also be illuminated.

WallMaker is a wall covering system made of 3mm or 6mm thick PVC panels reproducing any surface you can imagine, brick stone, wood, tile or assorted patterns. Application can provide router texture on panels and invisible finger joint edges.

The Rochester Hills McRae team of 40 also has access to the huge Toronto fabric and lighting manufacturing capability providing imaginative solutions for multiple outlet retail networks - two recent examples are showcased in these photos.

Introducing the McRae LED Film Series - one of our latest ideas! 🌱

Imagine making any glass surface into a projection screen by surfacing it with non-destructive, ultra-thin, film that retains transparency, adheres to glass, yet is controlled for periodic opacity and additional design. It feels and looks futuristic but can be accomplished at a remarkably low cost with outstanding results thanks to an innovative high tech new McRae product.

Its HD transparency creates a digital identity while retaining natural light, turning buildings and spaces into an immersive media platform that showcases artwork and advertising.

And coming soon, a further advanced LED film application that displays real-time information, interactive messaging, and can create a futuristic communication experience, even responding to human interaction.

The LED film can be flexibly hung or attached to the glass surface making it ideal for all kinds of architectural curtain walls and commercial display spaces. The film is flexible and versatile for a world of artistic applications. It is not just flat panels; it can be freely shaped onto any flat or curved surface. Its low energy consumption LED technology complies with green buildings standards while empowering intelligent space applications.

Achieving perfect color on a variety of media is not an easy task. Matching color backlit reproduction is complex; the result is subject to lighting sources, ambience and other challenge. 🎨

Addressing these factors is the full time obsession of Andrew Kennedy, McRae’s Color Specialist pictured here with his colour spectrophotometer. Utilizing unique Barbieri spectrophotometer equipment from Italy, sophisticated internally developed equipment, advanced software, and years of experience, Andrew ensures that the colour of each completed project fulfills the brand’s standards and expectations. Andrew’s eye for colour comes from being a trained artist who received his bachelor’s degree from the highly regarded Rhode Island School of Design’.

To calibrate the equipment and create the largest possible color gamut, literally thousands of samples need to be assessed and integrated into color profiles prior to any printing. Ultimately proofs are microscopically compared to each client’s standard. The process is repeated until a perfect result is achieved.

“We upgraded to the Barbieri Spectro LFP qb for the ability to maintain optimal control of our color output and improve our color profiles. With various front lit and backlit fabrics, we knew we needed an instrument that would allow us to achieve the widest color gamut possible on each material,” Andrew explains. The Italian company even selected McRae as a Finalist for its 2024 Barbieri Excellence Award.

We're sharing one of the most important parts of the team today - our Customer Service department, central to building client trust and satisfaction. ✨

Led by Stella Goumas-Botelho, McRae’s team of Customer Service reps have a critical role making life flow effortlessly for customers, while enabling the production staff to deliver the requisite order perfectly. And it can be complicated - many technologies come together to bring stunning displays and retail environments to life. That means extensive training to understand a broad range of complex departments and the CS Team touches and understands them all.

As Director of Client Services, Stella puts the right people in place with the right personality, the technical capabilities and the non-stop energy to provide the solid structure for fast, accurate order delivery and follow-up. She is the orchestra conductor, matching CSRs to each client over a diverse range of endeavours: luxury brands, automotive, retail, shows and more.

An example of this process in motion is pictured here! Working with the client and engineering, Kaitlyn Leech, senior member of McRae’s CS team helped re-imagine the client’s logo from typical circle discs to a 4-foot x4-foot logo-shaped construction using water jet cut aluminum to make the logo shape and still be able to create a 2” deep pillowfit style fabric graphic to go on the frame. The client was extremely pleased with this unique result.

We are very conscious of the environmental implications of what we do and we believe green matters 🌎. On both the input and manufacturing sides of the equation, we have taken steps to be environmentally responsible. Our recycling processes are extensive and include collecting and recycling fine dust, anodized and raw aluminum back to the aluminum companies.

There’s much more that we do:

🌱 Our fabric “cut offs” are collected and placed into bins. The fabrics are recycled, bailed and reused again to make other products such as purses and hats.

🌱 McRae uses 100% post-consumer recycled fabric whenever possible.

🌱 We use water based natural pigment dyes in our print process. We collect the wastewater and extract the dyes by incineration to ensure safe water disposal.

🌱 We are committed to the environment and encourage our clients to join us. Our clients who are involved in our fabric recycling program can return their old fabrics and displays and we take care of recycling them.

We look forward to continuing and extending these efforts in 2026. If you would like to follow along, please subscribe to our free newsletter by visiting: https://mailchi.mp/mcraeimaging/the-big-picture

Meet Orland Akiwenzie – Employee 1! 👋 Fresh out of the Ontario College of Art with a specialty in photography, Orland answered an ad and joined McRae Custom Colour in 1988. At that point, McRae was a photography-based company; Orland worked the 10 darkrooms, did printing and helped build displays.

It wasn’t long until McRae shifted from photo-enlargement to large format fabric printing and that business quickly began to boom. Moving with the ever expanding company to Mississauga, Orland’s responsibilities increased continuously taking advantage of his many skills as a fine artist, metal worker and his depth in architecture, which he had been exposed to at Toronto’s Central Tech.

With the evolution to fabric printing capabilities with previously impossible 10-foot printing widths, Orland and the company continued to explore new ground. That innovation continues today since many projects are custom orders.

As head of finishing Orland does everything that’s needed to create solutions for original design ideas, assembling components and working with the printing and fabricating teams. “I’m responsible for how everything looks when it’s done,” Orland explains, and that often means solving problems and coordinating materials in ways that master a new challenge every day.

In the 1960s, Floyd McRae was a principle at BGM, at that time Canada’s premier custom photo facility. Setting out on a separate path to ensure his clients received personal service excellence, he established McRae Custom Colour opening the doors in in 1966.

The company grew and developed an industry leading reputation.

But technology never sleeps. As 2000 dawned, photo enlargement as a display and signage medium was consigned to the history books along with linotype and home phones. Under a new partnership that anticipated that the future was digital, McRae moved to become specialists in wide format dye sublimation imaging using equipment that was previously only found in Europe.

That new team was headed by Bob Murray, who remains CEO today. With his guidance the company has continued to evolve into North America’s leader in digital production using an exclusive IMAGE DNA colour profiling process guarantees the most brilliantly printed result with perfect colour matching. The company has also embraced critical manufacturing skills including lighting engineering with design and production using sophisticated state-of-the art equipment in house.

As the company’s 60th year arrives, the team has grown to more than 100 and continues to develop new techniques and strive for even higher levels of image reproduction and display quality.

The year ahead will include several milestone events – stay tuned by subscribing to our newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/mcraeimaging/the-big-picture 🔗

We wanted to reshare a fun look behind the scenes at McRae! Fabrication of custom exhibits and displays requires complex expertise and a particularly accomplished part of the team, which includes machinists, assemblers and technicians, is our sewing team of 25, some of whom are pictured here!

Fabric assembly demands care and awareness. It can look easy, especially when sewers complete it, but that requires understanding and know-how gained from a 25 year history of manufacturing. All our work is done in house under close supervision by people who take pride in their work which results in projects that are completed impeccably, so on site installation can be accomplished smoothly.
