| Building public understanding from day one

In December 2016, public transit in the metropolitan Vancouver area took a leap forward with the inauguration of the Evergreen Extension of the Skytrain rapid transit system. This 11-kilometre extension of the Millennium Line connected suburban municipalities of Coquitlam and Port Moody to Metro Vancouver’s transit network. More than a new transit line, it marked a major milestone for regional mobility and urban development.

NATIONAL worked with the operator TransLink to plan and support the launch of the new line. The challenge was to coordinate a moment involving multiple levels of government, community stakeholders, and thousands of future riders, while ensuring the public could easily understand and adopt the new service from day one.

Leading up to the launch, a communications strategy helped prepare riders for service changes and new routes, supported by on-site teams deployed across the system to answer questions in real time.

On December 2, 2016, the launch unfolded as a carefully coordinated sequence. An official announcement brought together public officials and project partners. At noon, the first passengers boarded. Throughout the day, stations along the extension hosted community celebrations, activities, and on-the-ground engagement.

The result was immediate adoption, with the line quickly becoming part of daily mobility patterns across the region. More than an opening day, it marked the moment a new transit corridor became part of how people move.

Its rapid adoption made it clear: a transit line only succeeds when people know how to use it from day one.

Sometimes, the medium is the message. And sometimes, you have to build the medium yourself.

The Bay of Fundy is home to the world’s highest tides, one of New Brunswick’s most powerful natural experiences. But the drama of a fishing boat sitting in the mud at low tide, then floating 52 feet higher when the water returns, is hard to capture in a static image.

So for ExploreNB, we helped turn that story into a format of its own.

The Fundy Belle brought the Bay of Fundy to one of Toronto’s busiest intersections: a lobster boat rising above the street, surrounded by captain-led storytelling, New Brunswick flavours, sounds, conversations, and plenty of double takes.

Part out-of-home, part experience, part destination storytelling, the activation was designed to earn attention in a competitive travel market and bring one of New Brunswick’s most remarkable natural experiences to life in a way people could see, hear, taste, and remember.

We’re proud to help bring Get a Sense of New Brunswick to life with ExploreNB, Time & Space Media, and Parade Studios, helping people get a real sense of the province.
