You see the sign and instantly know what you're getting. That's the power of a logo – it's your business's visual shorthand. Invest wisely in a logo, but do invest. Done well, you can keep it forever. Once you decide it's time to have a logo, step #1 is to find the right designer. Share your thoughts, point out other logos you like & dislike. As the process begins, don't be shy about comments, critiques, and asking for revisions. A good designer expects to go back and forth until you're happy, because they know how important and long-lasting a logo can be!

"Location, location, location" isn't just for houses; it's my daily working route. I got some work done at a breakfast restaurant, went back home for awhile and am now sitting in Second Cup, trying not to crack a smile. Wouldn't want people to think I enjoy this stuff...

Helluva summer. Living in Montreal is like riding a weather thrill-ride that whips us back and forth from tropical resort to Neptune. And then we get back in line and do it again...

Let's give the generic "Happy Holidays" a holiday. Chanukah is now over. New Years is 11 days away and Chinese New Year is in February. Christmas is the only game in town. So a joyous Merry Christmas to all who celebrate, while the rest of us enjoy the reflected goodwill, the nice festive tunes, and the time off.

"You better watch out..." -- that's either a line from a Christmas song or a Stephen King movie, depending how you say it. Also depends whether the next line is, "you better not cry", or, "...there's a clown behind you". Words lead people down specific paths, towards specific feelings, into specific actions. Make sure you choose the right ones, because words, like clowns, aren't always what you think they are.

The Rebound Relationship: You worked with another graphic designer or writer, but things didn't end well. They don't call. They've moved on. They've taken a little piece of your heart, along with all your files. And now you have to learn to trust again. That's where I come in. I'm the rebound relationship. I rebuild the original artwork your ex won't give back, I rescue old files for material you need today. I make sure everything prints, reads, and displays properly. I'll be the one who treats you right.

Pick a Business-Feeling.

What feeling do you want people to have when they see your business? Trust, expertise, service, fun, great-price, great-taste, etc.... Now pick one or two of those feelings and make sure every piece of marketing material reflects them. That's your hook. Because there's little else separating you from your many competitors that do the same thing.

It's 10:00pm on a Saturday night and I'm finishing off a project for a client. That's the nice part of having your own business -- you get to choose which 60 hours a week you work.

I'm told I look great in the dark. Some of my clients think so, apparently. They have a big presentation or need to promote a product or service, and I'm the outside talent brought in to grab their audience's attention. They need clever & sharp material. They need impact. And often, their information must remain confidential. Which means my work stays in the shadows. I parachute in, create material in their voice, and then disappear under cover of night, leaving no fingerprints behind. Just an invoice.
