Here are 3 habits I’ve created over time and how I created them:
1. Reading: I started reading 15 minutes per day, and to be honest, it was hard at the beginning. I was always thinking about something else. I just couldn’t stay focused. But you know what? I stuck to it and now I even stopped putting a time limit. Now, everyday I just pick the book I’m currently reading and I read 1, 2 ,3 chapters, it doesn’t matter to me anymore.
Will I stop there? Certainly not. I’m going to improve by 1% every day until I can read 1 book, 2 books or hell, maybe even 3 books per week. The only thing I can control is improving bit by bit, every day. The rest is up to god.
2. Working out: You know how to be more efficient at work? Work out. You know how to feel more energized? Work out. Working out is so beneficial, I had to make it a habit. Again, I started small, by working out in the gym 3 days a week.
Now, I’m working out every single day, and I’ve never felt better. I’m in the gym at least 3 times a week and the other days I’m either walking outside, running or just doing a quick 30 minutes abs workout at home.
But this wasn’t a drastic change. I started 3 days a week for 4 weeks. Then, 4 days a week for 4 weeks, then 5, and 6 until I reached 7.
3. Waking up earlier: ‘’Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man young, wealthy and healthy’’ by Benjamin Franklin. This quote made this habit a little bit different. This was, compared to the other two habits, a drastic change. I heard the quote, it flicked a switch, and the next morning I was up by 5:30 AM.
After that moment, it was just discipline. Every morning when that alarm goes off, I get up and start working. Yes, there are some mornings where I’d rather just stay in bed and some others where I feel ready and energized, but you know what? How I feel doesn’t matter to me, so I get up anyway, every single time.
You see, some habits are going to be built over time, and some are just going to be a drastic change in your life. As long as you understand that discipline is what’s going to keep you from going back to your old life, you’ll be good.
Remember, 1% every day.
