The Pentagon is facing criticism after quietly changing how it reports U.S. military casualties from the war with Iran.
According to an updated casualty database, 18 U.S. service members have been killed and 624 wounded since the conflict began. However, casualties that occurred after July 7 have been moved into a new category called “Overseas Operations,” making the overall toll more difficult to track.
Lawmakers from both parties, veterans, and military experts have raised concerns about the change, arguing it reduces transparency. Some critics believe the reclassification could support the administration’s claim that the fighting entered a “new phase,” potentially affecting how the War Powers Act is interpreted. The Pentagon has not provided a detailed explanation for the new reporting method.
