More than 120 students from schools across Saskatchewan got a hands-on introduction to careers in mining, trades, and technology during a special event at Saskatchewan Polytechnic Moose Jaw campus on June 3.

The Girls in Trades and Technology event, hosted by Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Women in Trades and Technology (WITT) program in partnership with Women in Mining/Women in Nuclear Saskatchewan, was held during Saskatchewan Mining Week and aimed to expose Grade 6 and 7 students to career opportunities they may not otherwise encounter.

The event featured five hands-on demonstrations highlighting careers in mining, trades, and technology. Students explored welding, electrical engineering technology, civil engineering technology, environmental technology, and renewable energy through activities such as bending metal, testing concrete strength, examining industrial electrical systems, and using Geiger counters to detect radiation in everyday objects and mining samples.

At Sask Polytech's Energy Lab, students explored solar power through a hands-on exercise that demonstrated how renewable energy systems are designed and installed. After learning how technicians determine the best location for solar panels, students wired a solar panel system and tested their work by seeing whether it could power a light bulb.

The event coincided with Saskatchewan Mining Week, which runs from May 31 to June 6. According to the Saskatchewan Mining Association, the province's growing mining sector is expected to require approximately 15,000 new employees over the next decade in careers ranging from trades and engineering to environmental sciences and technology.

Runners, walkers, families, and first-time participants are being encouraged to lace up their shoes and take part in the returning Moose Jaw Running Festival later this week, as organizers continue raising funds for pediatric rehabilitation equipment at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital.

The annual charity event will take place Sunday, June 14, starting at 8:30 a.m., and will feature distances for all ages and ability levels, including a five-kilometre run or walk, a 10-kilometre run or walk, a half-marathon, and the popular 200-metre Runt Run for children under 10.

The festival is presented by Golden West Trailer & Equipment and organized in partnership with Saskatchewan-based event company 321 Go Running. All proceeds will once again support the Moose Jaw Health Foundation (MJHF) and pediatric rehabilitation services.

Last year, more than 325 runners and walkers participated, helping raise a record $15,004 for the foundation's pediatric rehabilitation department. The funds support specialized rehabilitation equipment at the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital, including walkers, therapeutic bikes, and treadmills that help children improve mobility and independence.

Race weekend will begin with a Beer Mile event on Saturday, June 13, at 7 p.m. in Wakamow Valley. Participants will complete a one-mile course while stopping to drink two beers along the route, with all finishers receiving a commemorative pint glass.

Participants in all race categories will also receive a commemorative T-shirt and medal.

On race day, package pickup will be available at the start-finish area from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. Race starts are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. for the half-marathon and 10-kilometre events, 8:45 a.m. for the Runt Run, and 9 a.m. for the five-kilometre race. All events will begin and end on the zero block of Fairford Street East, just beside Clothes Encounter at 237 Main Street North.

Customers wondering whether DeeBesties Nigerian Restaurant & Bar has permanently closed can rest easy.

Owner Adeola (Dee) Afolayan said the restaurant is preparing for a new chapter after leaving its former location at 20 Main Street North, with plans to reopen in a new downtown space in the coming weeks.

While details of the restaurant's future location are still being finalized, Afolayan said DeeBesties intends to remain downtown and continue serving the community that has supported the business since it first opened in August 2024.

Since opening on Aug. 31, 2024, DeeBesties Nigerian Restaurant & Bar has become known for authentic Nigerian dishes such as Jollof rice and small chops, while also serving as a gathering place where residents can experience a different culture through food, music, and community events.

Over the past year, the restaurant has become known for more than its food. In December 2025, Afolayan and her family opened DeeBesties on Christmas Day, providing a free meal and gathering space for residents who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.

That community-minded approach has continued into 2026. Alongside plans for Moose Jaw's first Afro-Caribbean Family Fun Festival on July 18, the business also received a $10,000 grant through DoorDash Canada's Black Food Energy program in March, helping support its growth.

Although the restaurant has left its former location, Afolayan said DeeBesties remains open through delivery services while preparations continue for a new home. Customers can continue placing orders through the restaurant's website, social media channels, and delivery services.

“We started taking orders yesterday, but it's delivery only right now, not dine-in. We're operating from a registered kitchen,” she said.

While the restaurant's next chapter is still taking shape, Afolayan said customers can expect the same food, atmosphere, and sense of community that have defined DeeBesties since 2024.

For now, customers can continue ordering through DeeBesties’ online and delivery platforms, including “DeeBesties Nigerian Restaurant & Bar” on Facebook, DoorDash, and Uber Eats while preparations for the move continue.

𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐏𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐓: During National Nursing Week, Venvi The Bentley Moose Jaw took a moment to recognize some of its own health care heroes by celebrating 10 retired nurses who now call the residence home. Described by the community as the “OG” frontline workers, the group spent decades caring for patients, supporting families, and helping shape health care in and around Moose Jaw. Their careers may have concluded, but their legacy of compassion, service, and dedication continues to be remembered and appreciated by the community they served.

As midway rides prepare to roll onto the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company grounds and months of planning come together, the 2026 Moose Jaw Hometown Fair, set for June 19 to 21, will also mark a first for the organization's new general manager.

Tanya Legare, who joined the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company on April 8 after previously serving as administrator of the Moose Jaw & District Seniors Association, is preparing to oversee her first hometown fair while learning the ropes of one of the city's longest-running traditions.

Recruited to apply for the position earlier this spring, Legare said the fair committee and volunteers have helped ease her transition into the role despite arriving just weeks before the event.

Among this year's new attractions are the Hockey Circus Show, Silver Starlets, and Little Rodeo Pro, a family-oriented presentation designed to introduce children to rodeo activities in a safe and interactive environment. Legare said the approximately 30-minute Little Rodeo Pro show gives young participants an opportunity to try activities such as roping, barrel-racing-style challenges, and riding mechanical equipment while learning about rodeo culture.

In addition to the returning midway rides, the fair's entertainment lineup also includes performances by Three Hat Circus and strolling magician Magic by Chris, along with a petting zoo, mounted shooting competitions, axe throwing, mechanical bull rides, and nightly fire shows. Agricultural programming throughout the weekend will feature the 4-H Steer Show on Saturday and the 4-H Female Show and annual 4-H Awards and Sale on Sunday.

Advance tickets are available until June 18 at PetValu Moose Jaw, Family Pizza, and the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds office at 250 Thatcher Drive. Regular admission tickets will continue to be available throughout the fair. Daily gate admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, while children six and under are admitted free. Parking will be available for $5 at the nearby Canadian Tire and Superstore lots.

A long-running senior housing project is entering a new chapter this spring as longtime project manager Art Watson prepares to hand over responsibilities to Carol Tremblay after decades of volunteer service.

The Saskatchewan Elks Seniors Homes development on South Hill has provided affordable independent living accommodations for older adults since opening in 1961. The 10-unit complex is located along the 100 and 200 blocks of Maple Street East, just south of Plaxton Lake.

Watson, who managed the Moose Jaw project from 1994 to 2000 and again from 2008 until this year, officially concluded his volunteer role on May 31 after nearly three decades. Tremblay has spent the past two months working alongside him as part of the transition and will assume responsibility for applications, tenant relations, and day-to-day operations on June 1.

The one-bedroom units are approximately 550 square feet and include a kitchen, living area, bathroom, utility room, stove, refrigerator, and washing machine. Designed for accessible day-to-day living, the homes are ground-level with only a single step at the entrance. Residents are responsible for household upkeep, lawn care, and snow removal.

Intended for lower-income seniors who can live independently, the homes are available to applicants aged 55 and older whose total household income does not exceed $39,000 per year. Applicants must provide income verification, and Watson emphasized that acceptance is not guaranteed simply by submitting an application.

Rent is currently $460 per month, with water included, making the units one of the more affordable independent-living housing options in the community. Residents are responsible for all other utilities. The development is also non-smoking and does not permit pets.

As of May 29, all units were occupied, although interested residents may still submit an application for future consideration or learn more by calling 306-630-0103.
