Community is unity, and unity is community.

These words shared by Joyce Jonathan Crone reflect how special it was to be in community at yesterday's ribbon making workshop hosted by .arises.project at .

We learned about the history of ribbon skirts, and the unimaginable impact of losing this beautiful piece of cultural and spiritual importance as part of the colonial genocide against Indigenous Peoples on Turtle Island. Then we came together, people of all ages, to make our own ribbon skirts.

Stitch by stitch, reflecting upon the colonial practices that have broken apart families, communities, and possibilities to live in respectful relationships with all beings.

Acknowledging that this is but one small act of reconciliation, an ongoing process that is our responsibility as non-Indigenous people and settlers.

Remembering that, for all our world has experienced and continues to experience, change is always possible.

To Joyce and the sewing helpers, thank you for this beautiful day. It was wonderful to watch everyone turn fabric into ribbon skirts that will be treasured forever. I can't wait to finish mine up and wear it with pride for all the intention it holds.

Settling into the new year with a fresh mind and frozen air. ❄️

I'm grateful for the opportunity to partner with charities and non-profits as they do good in their communities. But I'll also be honest in saying it was difficult to watch amazing leaders and staff on the verge of burnout. (And if I'm being fully honest, I was there too by the end of December.)

The work we do at our organizations can be fulfilling and meaningful, but it's also challenging in so many ways. The work seems to grow as budgets seem to shrink. There's never enough time, but there's always another need to address.

I've been reflecting on how we can create change in ways that are sustainable for us all. With the uncertainty of what's to come - politically, economically, and culturally - the issues are more than I can wrap my head around.

But I do know one thing: Community is our way through. We need each other to support the work we're all doing. Whether it's checking in on our colleagues, having real conversations about the need for rest (without guilt), or allowing ourselves to find joy outside of our work, relying on each other will carry us onwards.

We can do good things as individuals, but we can do great things as a collective. 🖤

It's hard to believe we're in the last week of summer break! 🤯

This season, I've had the absolute joy of working with charities on new projects like social media and messaging strategies, donor stewardship and retention, website content, email outreach, and event packages. For a communications nerd whose creativity thrives in collaboration, I'm grateful to work alongside brilliant, passionate leaders who do so much in and for their communities!

Returning to school is also a new adventure. In my goal to become a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), I'm strengthening my skills by obtaining a Fundraising Management Certificate from The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at Toronto Metropolitan University

Summer school + making new fundraising friends = a very happy me! I'm excited to learn more next term.

☀️ What things did you enjoy doing this summer?

A fantastic local podcast series that's absolutely worth the listen! 🎧

Season two of At Home in Muskoka has finally started, and we have a great lineup of conversations ready to drop every few weeks over the summer.

First up, let's talk ecological conservation as community care with Dr. Norman Yan. In 2014, Dr. Norman Yan completely failed to retire from his career in the science of understanding the human impacts on Ontario’s lakes, how the damage can be fixed, and how future damage can be prevented.

Why this failure to retire? Because he’s an integral member of of the Friends of the Muskoka Watershed, a local charity that turns science into community-wide action to protect the Muskoka watershed. You can support the work of the Friends of the Muskoka Watershed by donating at https://fotmw.org

In today’s episode of At Home in Muskoka, Dr. Yan joins me for a conversation about how the natural environment is part of our community, and what we can do to strengthen our relationship to the land and water of Muskoka.

Stay tuned to the end for the most inspiring two minutes of a conversation I've been privileged to be part of, where Dr. Yan shares why he chooses to hope and on what basis he continues to make that choice every day.

📣 DEADLINE EXTENDED

Do you know a young person who is passionate about environmental issues and land-based education?

Through a grant from the Muskoka Environment Fund, our Foundation is sponsoring a young person (aged 14-20) to attend the 2024 Youth Summit for Mother Earth hosted by Ontario Nature. The grant will cover the hard costs of participating in the summit, including accommodations, meals, speakers, workshops, materials, event coordination, and additional costs associated with reducing barriers for youth participation (e.g., travel).

Run for youth by youth, the 2024 Youth Summit for Mother Earth will offer a unique cross-cultural event with opportunities for young Indigenous and non-Indigenous leaders to connect, participate in educational workshops, and take part in a weekend of outdoor fun and learning.

We are accepting applications until June 21, 2024.

Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

We are celebrating the joy, beauty, and power of 2SLGBTQI+ people this month (and all 12!) because Pride is about more than a parade. Pride is a protest, a resistance to the structures and institutions that have tried to erase us.

But we are still here. 🌈

As a queer-owned company, we are grateful to the organizations that are making our communities safer and more inclusive for all. With the rise of anti-2SLGBTQI+ hate and violence on the rise, these organizations are supporting our communities and reminding us that love will outshine hate.

Here are just a few organizations that are working towards equity and social justice for 2SLGBTQI+ folks:
