The overlap between client and friend has always been at the heart of all of our working collaborations. This time is no different. Keltie and Michael are about to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their farm, and not only are we the very fortunate recipients of their delicious, made-with-love produce for many months of the year, but we also now know them as friends. They asked us to work with them on labelling for their produce and to make a farm sign celebrating 10 years of growing their farm here in Nova Scotia. Of course, we said yes!

We recently designed a new identity and signage for the Northumberland Fisheries Museum in Pictou, NS. We wanted the design to reflect the history of the local fishing industry referencing boxed packaging, boat names and hand painted signage of days gone by. We worked with Colin and Catherine .ca, who applied our vision to the museum's exterior signage. If you find yourself in Pictou, stop at this sweet museum where the ‘Salt of the Earth meets the Salt of the Sea.’

In 2011, the last year of the rabbit, we designed and letterpress printed this lunar new year postcard to send to friends and family. #2011 #2023

The last few months have been a tad busy, working, packing up our life for storage and then moving into our camper van for full time wandering. And then, of course, we’ve been on the move for two months. We got to stop and visit our friend/client, Mike, on our way east from Algonquin Park and finally got to see a couple of the portable signs we designed and ordered back in May. We have yet to see all of the pieces we worked on. If ever slows down and we stay still for more than a night or two it could happen!😉

Tasked with building a website for Raw by Nature Oyster Co was the most challenging and satisfying part of the design project.

For the past four and a half months we’ve been working with our friends, Mike and Graidhne, on the branding, stationery, website, signage, apparel, etc. for their raw bar catering business, Raw by Nature Oyster Co., which launches at the end of May in Muskoka, Kawartha Lakes and Toronto. We have enjoyed every minute of our collaboration. When you love and respect your clients it doesn’t feel like work. We look forward to watching our friend’s business grow and are so grateful for the opportunity to contribute.

Our nostalgia led us down memory lane this week to the September day in 2007 when we moved our printing equipment from the shop we had rented on Roncesvalles for ten years to the new studio we built behind our home on Pearson. Since we were moving just a half a block away, the equipment movers hand hauled each piece of equipment down the street, around the corner and down the alley. We sure did love our landlords, the Jarzebek family, who operated a Polish butcher shop next door for 46+ years. That’s Karl himself standing on the left quietly supervising the equipment movers.

Roncesvalles is a village within the city. A place we lived, worked, shopped, met friends and neighbours, raised children, got married. We started our first business, GreenStreet Design, in an apartment at 99 Roncesvalles in 1990 and opened Pantry Press at 103 Roncesvalles in 1997. The Roncesvalles community began to change in 2003 when Cathryn opened Frock, a beautiful women's clothing and gift store and our SoRo (South Roncesvalles), then LoRo (Lower Roncesvalles) community began to grow. The business owners south of Galley jokingly referred to ourselves as the sweat-hogs, excluded from the BIA for decades. Once Cathryn set up shop, we had our ever-stylish, fun-loving friend to all, anchor.
We have been feeling melancholy and nostalgic since hearing the news of Cathryn's passing on January 27th. It's been far too long since we last spent time with our friends Cathryn and Jim, having made fewer and fewer trips to Toronto after moving to Amherstburg three and a half years ago. We will always carry Roncesvalles, and Cathryn’s beautiful spirit, inimitable style and light-up-the-village smile in our hearts.

Some of our favourite invitation creations were in celebration of bar and bat mitzvahs. Materials have always been an important part of our design choices. Choosing to become printers was in part a response to other printers telling us we could not print on this or that paper / material. We were thrilled when the client agreed to incorporate this pink flocked paper we inherited from Terry at the Invitation House when they closed shop.

It wasn’t often we outsourced a service but we wanted to incorporate laser cut detail into a stationery suite and this was the perfect opportunity. This invitation pulled out all the stops. We created custom die cut response cards and maps and information cards, a custom folder to contain all the components with a tied ribbon closure. But, our favourite detail was the real feel letterpress lace background pattern which reflected the actual lace from the bride’s gown. Never just an average wedding invitation at Pantry Press!
