Celebrate Earth Day by Planting a Pollinator Garden
By Julia MacKinnon

Pollinators: you might be indifferent to them, think they’re too creepy-crawly, or find them to be nuisances buzzing around your head while you’re trying to enjoy the outdoors. I won’t argue that some of them can be annoying or even a bit alarming at times (is that thing trying to bite me?), but they’re so much more than that!

Pollinators play a major part in keeping the Earth’s ecosystems
strong and resilient. Honeybees and bumblebees are the most important, but other pollinators include butterflies, moths, bats, birds, and even some beetles and flies.

Pollen is needed for fertilization, the production of seeds and fruit, and the creation of future generations of plants. Although pollen can be spread by air and water, more than 80% of flowering plants need help from different animal species to do the pollinating. It’s not only ornamental plants that need pollinators - about one-third of the earth’s food crops also rely on them. Plants that don’t get pollinated will eventually cease to reproduce and become extinct, affecting other species up and down the food chain.

Threats to pollinators’ survival include pesticides, loss of habitat, and climate change. But we can help: in honour of Earth Day on April 22, celebrate by planting a pollinator garden. It’s simply made up of plants that are especially good at attracting pollinators, and provides them with the food and habitats they need to survive.

Plants native to Canada are generally considered the gold standard; having evolved over thousands of years in specific regions, they are well adapted to local soil, light, precipitation, and pests. The result is a healthier and more resilient plant that requires less resources and overall maintenance. Native plants have co-evolved with pollinators, developing specific floral traits over many years to help lure them in. Some plants not only provide pollen but also act as a crucial food source for certain species. One example is the milkw**d plant. Monarch caterpillars feed on its leaves exclusively; without milkw**d, there would be no monarch butterflies.

You can attract pollinators almost all year long by choosing plants that will provide successive blooming from spring until fall. If you don’t have space for a garden, you can grow plants in a container on your balcony or patio instead. Here are just a few suggestions for perennials and shrubs that are great at attracting pollinators, and will rebloom year after year.

For spring flowering:
columbine
foamflower
tickseed
allium
spiderwort
viburnum
weigela
lilac
forsythia

For summer flowering:
black-eyed Susan
coneflower
phlox
catmint
salvia
lavender
bee balm
milkw**d
butterfly w**d

For fall flowering:
aster
sedum
goldenrod
evening primrose
obedient plant
blazing star
cardinal flower
hummingbird mint
Joe Pye w**d

Locate your pollinator garden or container in the sunniest spot in your yard, somewhere with at least three hours of direct sunlight a day, and preferably six. Growing each type of plant in groups of 3-5 allows for stronger scent and visibility, making it easier to draw pollinators in. Avoid the use of pesticides whenever possible, and offer a water source like a bird bath or small fountain.

Next time you find a pollinator flying around your head, before you panic and give it a swat, spare a thought for all the good it does for our planet. Happy planting, and happy Earth Day!

Business Profile: Built to Last - The Family Legacy Behind Matos Construction & Paving Ltd.

By Hannah Teichroeb

For more than three decades, Matos Construction & Paving Ltd. has been helping shape and maintain properties throughout Oakville with skill, integrity, and pride. As a family-owned and operated company, they specialize in residential, commercial, and industrial asphalt paving, interlocking stone, and concrete services. For over 35 years, they have delivered high-quality workmanship and reliable service, building a reputation rooted in trust and long-standing community relationships.

The Matos story began with a strong work ethic and a genuine passion for building. What started as a commitment to hard work steadily grew into a lifelong career and a thriving family business. Over the years, the team has constructed far more than driveways and parking lots. They have built meaningful relationships with clients who return time and time again, confident in the consistent quality and professionalism they receive. Being able to pass down knowledge, skills, and values from one generation to the next is a point of great pride for the family, and it is reflected in every project they complete.

At the heart of Matos Construction & Paving Ltd. is a simple philosophy: do it right the first time. This guiding principle shapes every aspect of their work. Whether the project involves a residential driveway or a large commercial space, the team approaches each job with attention to detail and the mindset that they are working on their own property. Honesty, quality craftsmanship, and dependable results are not just promises but daily standards. Their reputation has been built carefully over decades, and maintaining that trust remains one of their highest priorities.

One of the most rewarding parts of their work is witnessing the transformation that comes with every finished project. From the first stages of preparation to the final smooth surface, there is a visible change that enhances both the function and appearance of a property. Helping clients bring their vision to life is what motivates the team day after day. No matter the size of the project, seeing the completed result and knowing they played a role in improving someone’s space brings a deep sense of satisfaction.

Working together as a family also adds a unique dynamic to their business. Like any family, there are moments of friendly competition, such as racing to finish a section first, along with plenty of shared laughs on the job site. After 35 years in the industry, they have learned that enjoying what you do and who you do it with makes even the busiest days worthwhile. Their team atmosphere feels like an extension of family, creating a positive environment that clients can sense when they work together.

Construction is more than a profession for the Matos family. It is part of who they are. Over the years, they have balanced long workdays with raising their families and staying connected to the community they have called home for more than 40 years. They believe in hard work, respect, and leading by example for the next generation. Building a business that supports their family while serving the community is an achievement they value deeply.

As they look ahead, Matos Construction & Paving Ltd. remains grateful for the trust and support they have received. They understand that quality paving and construction is an investment, and their goal is to provide workmanship that stands the test of time. With integrity, pride, and a commitment to excellence, they look forward to continuing to serve Oakville for many years to come.
