REFUSING TO FORGIVE
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
COLOSSIANS 3:13
God has set the example. Because He has forgiven us, we are called to forgive others.
When we refuse to extend forgiveness to those who have offended us, the following negative consequences can ensue:
1. We can become consumed with bitterness, anger, resentment, and deep frustration.
2. We have difficulty loving others and being loved. Our life is filled with hardness.
3. An unforgiving spirit blocks our relationship with God. Our prayers are not heard.
4. Physical problems can actually emerge when we carry grudges and hatred in our hearts.
Extending forgiveness not only benefits the person being forgiven but also releases the burden we are carrying. Many times an unforgiving spirit only hurts the one bearing the grudge.
When someone has committed an offense against you, acknowledge your hurt to the Lord. Do not deny the pain you may be experiencing. Then lay it at the foot of the cross.
Give up your right to retaliate or hold onto the pain. Forgiving others brings peace. Let's not delay, but forgive today!
Dear Lord, sometimes it is nearly impossible to forgive others, yet I know it is Your will. Enable me to forgive as You have forgiven me so that peace, not bitterness, will rule my heart. Amen.
