It's ! Every day should be Otter Day π
Happy !
There are 13 different species of otters worldwide, most of which are considered vulnerable, threatened or endangered. Only the North American river otters, who you can visit in our Americas pavilion, are listed as a Least Concerned species. However, due to pollution, habitat loss and hunting, their numbers are decreasing and large sections of their previously occupied habitat now sit empty.
We are home to two North American River otters, RJ (or Rascal Jr.) and Talise. RJ is 4 years old and was born at Buffalo Zoo and has been with us here in Toronto for approximately a year and a half. Talise is an 8-year-old female, who was born in Kenora, ON, but was orphaned at a few weeks old has been in Toronto ever since. RJ and Talise can usually be spotted together, either swimming or cuddling while napping.
Keepers will be celebrating World Otter Day at our North American River Otters habitat at 12:30pm where RJ and Talise will receive ice treats and a special Keeper Talk.
