Happy Civic Holiday!
Did you know that the Civic Holiday isn't actually a federal holiday?
Unlike Canada Day or Labour Day, the first Monday in August is a provincial and municipal holiday, which means its name and purpose vary across the country. Here in Ontario, many simply know it as the Civic Holiday, while other communities celebrate it as Simcoe Day, Colonel By Day, John Galt Day, or other local commemorations honouring people who helped shape their communities.
The tradition dates back to the late 1800s, when municipalities began setting aside a summer holiday to celebrate local history and give people a chance to enjoy the warmest days of the year with family, friends, and neighbours.
Whether you're firing up the BBQ, heading to the cottage, exploring a local festival, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon at home, we hope you have a wonderful long weekend.
However you choose to spend it, take a moment to appreciate the people and communities that make Ontario such a great place to call home.
