What does meaningful consultation look like when Canada is moving quickly on major projects?

Roots Strategies Partner Deliah Bernard spoke with the Toronto Star about the proposed Pacific Link pipeline and the legal requirements surrounding consultation with First Nations.

For consultation to meet legal requirements, Indigenous communities need the information necessary in a timely manner in order to meaningfully engage with the project and its potential impacts.

As Deliah told the Star, the process so far “absolutely opens” the way for potential legal challenges especially when we reflect on past court rulings of this nature.

Roots Strategies partners Deliah Bernard and Robert Zhu were honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, to Ottawa and join a meaningful dialogue on Indigenous economic empowerment at Mādahòkì Farm.

The gathering brought together Indigenous leaders and partners from Canada and Australia to exchange knowledge, strengthen relationships and explore opportunities to advance Indigenous economic reconciliation internationally.

Thank you to the Governor-General, the Australian High Commission and Mādahòkì Farm for bringing us together for this important conversation.

Economic reconciliation is built through dialogue, relationships, and sustained action.

Last week at Canada 2020, we were glad to be part of conversations bringing together leaders, policymakers, and community voices to explore what meaningful progress can look like in practice.

A highlight was the “Indigenous Political Staffers Spotlight” panel, where Deliah Bernard joined a thoughtful discussion on the role Indigenous staffers play in shaping policy and advancing change from within.

From panels to conversations between sessions, the throughline was clear: reconciliation requires intention, collaboration, and continued momentum.
