School zones are back on this week.

Passing a school bus with its red lights flashing is $567 and six demerits in Alberta. Fifteen demerits suspends a licence. That is almost half of it for one pass you did not need to make.

School zones are 30. Doing 50 through one runs $228 and three points. You also cannot pass another vehicle inside the zone while it is on, even at the limit.

Most people miss the playground zones. Those are 30 every day, 8:30 in the morning until an hour after sunset. Weekends included.

If you drive for a living, the ticket is the cheap part. It lands on your abstract for three years. Your employer sees it. So does the insurer.

Forget the money for a second.

That street you ran at 50 all August is 30 now. There are kids stepping out from between parked cars and not one of them is looking. Nine out of ten school bus collisions happen in town, not out on the highway.

A loaded truck at 50 needs a lot more road to stop than a kid needs to step off a curb.

Nobody who ends up in that story planned it. They were running a bit late.
