In 2012 we organized a project where we had 10 local media pros choose a remarkable local senior to interview in front of a live audience. The interview could be about anything the pair decided they wanted to discuss. We filmed these interviews so we could preserve these stories as they were told by the people who lived them.

Our pal Dave Scott from the Norfolk Hub Magazine interviewed his friend and war hero Flight Officer Ike Hewitt. Ike grew up on a farm outside Port Dover prior to enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served with Bomber Command in the 97th Squadron. Ike's plane was shot down after a mission over Brest. He survived the crash, was captured by German soldiers, and spent the next three and half years in a POW camp, where he kept a scrapbook diary documenting his experiences and the experiences of his fellow prisoners. After the war, he returned to Norfolk County. In 2013, local historian Harry B. Barrett published Ike' story in his book "Flying officer Ike Hewitt, P.O.W. : war memories."

We are grateful to Ike Hewitt for his service, and for his willingness to share his story.

Norfolk Hub owner and editor Dave Scott interviews World War Two POW Ike Hewitt. Ike Hewitt tells the darkness of the war through his personal experiences.

The greatly improved Art with HEART Studio Inc. website is up and running and we're pretty happy with this one. It not only looks great, but it includes many options that make online program registrations, event bookings, and payments an easy, straightforward process for parents and guardians. On the administrative end, the online payment solutions are synced directly to the in-store point of sale system, which helps with payment processing and inventory tracking. It's also built so that Art with Heart staff can make their own updates to programs, events calendar, policies, and other content.

Thank you again Art with Heart for the opportunity to work on your site. We're looking forward to working with you again soon.

Inspire. Create. Motivate!

If you're lucky enough to be in Port Dover sometime soon, head over to Liberty Home Decor and Gift Boutique on Harbour Street. The store is packed with all kinds of fun decor, games, vintage collectibles, and clever gift ideas.

If you're not in town, check out the new online store we built for Liberty. Not only is the purplest site we've ever built - a distinction that previously belonged to our friends at Bonnieheath Estate Lavender & Winery - it includes a whole bunch of custom upgrades from the store's previous Shopify site, including upgraded listing, inventory tracking, and shipping options, plus connections to Liberty's bricks and mortar POS system and Etsy store.

And, there are no more transaction fees. Done. For good.

If you're ready for an upgrade to your online store, ordering system, or bookings / reservations, give us a shout. We'll come up with something that functions better than what you have now and will save you time and money.

Tom Flatt Realty is another longtime website client who we recently provided an upgrade to due to the code bordering on obsolete.

These upgrades are important for several performance and security reasons. Outdated code can cause problems with the site's functionality - breakdowns and viruses, etc. - but can also pose a potential threat to customers who provide private information.

If you're running any type of e-commerce on your site, or are collecting sensitive information from customers, make sure your site plugins are up to date with the latest versions.

The Waterford Girl Brand has been a valued client of ours for many years. So many years in fact that the code we used to build the original site had become more or less obsolete. This revamped, rebuilt, and upgraded gem was just launched.

When we built the original Waterford Girl website, artisan soap maker Lisa Ramey was working out of her home studio. She’s grown her business considerably, and now has a beautiful retail location at 18 Alice Street in Waterford. All her soap products and spa essentials are handmade, and she also sells a line of hand-poured soy candles, room sprays, and featured gift boxes.

We worked with Lisa right from the start on her brand development, labels, website, and copy. We also helped her with her online shopping solution, which is now more important than ever.

When you’re ready for a comprehensive branding and e-commerce upgrade, we’ll be here. In the meantime, check out dirtygirlsoapstudio.com for ideas.

Like many local businesses, things have slowed down quite a bit with the Covid mess. We've had to cancel Comedy Night at Lighthouse Theatre, our annual Norfolk Traveller publication, an updated cultural map, and a new music festival plan. We also had to put the elder abuse prevention and awareness seminars project and development of the new seniors centre in Port Dover on hold. It's a hell of a thing watching the business we've spent 11 years building come to a grinding halt pretty much overnight.

However: we did have some work in the hopper when everything went off the rails, and we've been crossing things off the list a bit at a time. This new website was launched a few weeks ago for the Port Dover Lions Club. It's a simple one, but it's nice and clean and much more user friendly than what was there before. Thank you again Lions for sending the work our way.

Port Dover Lions Club was chartered in October 1938 with 18 members. From the beginning the Lions’ motto was “We Serve” … that has been the focus of this community service club ever since. Read more...

Thank you NorfolkToday.ca, Venture Norfolk, and Matt LeBlanc for recognizing Adam as a community builder in Norfolk County. Many of the things he's built has been in partnership with the innovative organizations and entrepreneurs who he's met through the business. Hopefully the quarantine will be over soon and we can all get back to work on more community projects.

Sorry folks. Comedy Night is cancelled.

A STATEMENT ABOUT COVID-19

Friday, March 13

Dear friends of Lighthouse,

Your safety and well-being are of utmost importance to us. We have been carefully following recent developments regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus) and consulting with our board of directors and staff, fellow arts organizations, and local health authorities to determine how best to keep our patrons and staff healthy and safe.

Lighthouse Festival Theatre supports social distancing as a way to bolster the efforts of medical practitioners working to limit the worldwide spread of the coronavirus. To do our part, acting on the advice of Ontario’s chief medical officer to suspend large public gatherings, all scheduled performances and events at Lighthouse from now until April 16 are cancelled:

Comedy Night – March 14
March Break (Robin Hood, The Berenstain Bears, Sleeping Beauty) – March 17-18-19
Person of Interest – March 21
Execulink: A Night at the Theatre – March 24
Andrew Martin AMORE – March 26
ABBAMANIA & The Bee Gees/Night Fever – March 27
Buddy Holly – March 28
Drama Kidz presents A Glass Half Full – April 2 & 3
Time Is On My Side: The Rolling Stones Story – April 4
Volunteer Sign-Up Day – April 7
Red Carpet Social - April 9

Acting out of an abundance of caution, we will also be closing our doors to the public to contribute to the broader societal effort to slow the spread of the illness.

If you have a ticket to a cancelled event, the box office will contact you individually to discuss next steps, which include:

• credit on your account for a future performance
• full refund

It is our full intention to stage our community show (Guys and Dolls) and the summer season as scheduled. Our physical box office is now closed, but you can still reach us over the phone and online.

The risk posed by coronavirus to Ontarians remains low, but the situation is changing rapidly and we will keep you informed of new developments at the theatre.

“Lighthouse Festival Theatre is in full support of working on a societal level to ease the burden on our medical system for the benefit of all. We are equally committed to presenting our community show and our summer season and will use this time to prepare those productions,” said Artistic Director Derek Ritschel.

“A sincere thank you for supporting live theatre and the arts during this difficult time. We look forward to hearing your laughter ringing through our theatre this spring.”
