Thanksgiving has been a holiday that I’ve felt kinda gross about for a long time. Why would we celebrate something with such an obviously horrible past? Because the obligation of tradition is powerful and much easier than reflection.

This year I’m thankful to see this narrative changing, within myself and others.

Thankful to be actively learning about colonization and how it still negatively affects indigenous peoples today.

Thankful that so many social and human issues have been brought to light this year.

Thankful to see the world pushing for positive change.

I’m thankful that we can be thankful and not ignorant. That we can celebrate the wonderful things in our lives while working to understand the full depth of how they came to be.

One of my all time favourite companies that I’ve created for has got to be Drop Dead Candles. Their products are amazing and their aesthetic makes my 13 year old self drool. Don’t believe me? Check out their page!

Way back in spring of 2018 I was introduced to Mel of Drop Dead Candles. To say this was a dream brand to work on would be an understatement. What does Drop Dead make? Oh you know, just a bunch of weird cool candles in the shape of skulls and naked girls. Who buys from them? Goth moms. NEED I SAY MORE?

The vision for the brand clicked right away. In my initial design plan, I wrote “The elements of this brand will epitomize the goth mom we all strive to be. A strong sans-serif typeface will bring a bold and modern presence. Paired with a custom illustration featuring a skull, the alternative identity will again be characterized.” The plan was to update the current look and bring the visual side of the brand up to the professional level the business was now operating at.

I loved it, Mel loved it and the team at House Republic loved it. Everything with the brand came together so smoothly. House Republic organized an amazing shoot with Haley Photography, styled by House of Rue. Everything was dark and moody and matched so well with the brand elements I had designed.

Seeing Mel grow her brand, hitting sales milestones on Etsy, creating new products, expanding the branding with HR to include a special look for the “babe candle”, and working her own design magic on new candle packaging has been so awesome to see!

This is a pretty cute graphic for a not so cute topic... I miss you!

I miss seeing friends, and honestly, having more friends. Working for yourself can get really lonely, especially this year when we can’t even meet up for coffee a few times a month.

In years past I’ve worked on a few creative teams, at agencies, and in 3 downtown cores. Those were all super social spaces where I had friends and acquaintances to catch up with daily, events to attend as a group and creative projects we could collab on. Now it’s just me, chillin by myself in my home office.

I love love love working for myself, and by myself without distractions, but this year I’ve really been missing that daily irl work pal vibe I got so used to having.

To all my self employed biz friends, do you struggle with this too? What’s the magic cure?! I’ve always gotten super close with my work friends, but what do you do when you are your only coworker?!

So if the US has confirmed that UFOs exist, there’s a chance that aliens exist.

And if aliens exist, there’s a chance they know we exist.

Does that mean that there’s a chance an alien will come down and scoop me up? Maybe.

But I think the real question is...

Will the aliens respect social distancing guidelines and do they have the appropriate PPE?

Recently I’ve had to remind myself of this pretty often.
Sometimes for little things like...
“I have nothing good to cook, I can’t make a meal of this” uhh yeah, actually you can. Be a bit creative, get on google and find a recipe!
And sometimes it’s for big things like...
“I can’t make it through the summer with most weddings cancelled, that’s my busiest time of year”
Or the constant...
“I can’t get anything done, I’m so behind”
These ones are a bit trickier. Actually I can get through the summer, but I have to seriously look at my business and figure out a wedding replacement for my income. Actually I can get things done, but I need to adjust the expectations I have for myself and my productivity during this weird time. It’s bizarre having a fraction of your normal work but still feeling overwhelmed. This reminder that I can get through it is helping. This is my right now, not my forever.
What are you saying “actually you can” to these days?

I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but it’s okay to forgive.
Forgiving others doesn’t make you weak. You’re stronger because you have compassion and understanding. Forgiveness doesn’t mean accepting and excusing bad behaviour or bending to someone else’s will. It means letting go, it’s okay to let it go.
And while you’re at it, FORGIVE YOURSELF. We’ve all made mistakes, it’s part of being human. You deserve more than feeling bad about some s**t in the past that you can’t change. Learn from what happened and move the hell on with you’re amazing life!

Protect yourself and everyone in your community and just stay home as much as you can! Support local businesses in their online shops or through social media engagement. Cancel that function and move that meeting to a video chat cause corona virus doesn’t care about your biz hustle!

Right around this time last year I was installing my first large scale mural at Brock St Espresso ☕️

It’s honestly hard to believe this was last February. Weirdly it feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago, all at the same time.

Every time I see this mural in someone’s instagram stories, posts, or when I get the chance to pop in to BSE, I’m excited like it’s brand new again. This was my first large scale mural and my first permanent in-store piece. Your first love always gives you butterflies no matter how long it’s been!

Once upon a time I had only hoped that murals like this would someday be a part of my job. Now they’re virtually my main gig! I’m forever grateful to Lorena & David of Brock St Espresso for giving me the first, most amazing opportunity to dive into the career of my dreams 🖤

This beautiful mirror is from a wedding back in June, but the message is timeless. And so is the frame! Mirrors of this style are almost always in gold, but this baby is a rustic white. Unique & special, just like my pizza order ❤️

It’s done. And it’s up. Mural magic is happening in Prince Edward County!
I’m so pleased to finally be able to share this project! Hawley Crescent has been a long long loooong time client of mine and I am so grateful. They’re always excited for me to pursue new techniques & ideas with each project and ever ready to tell others about their experience.
