Part of the Portal branding process is getting clear on who you’re for. Without knowing your target audience, everything becomes a guess. Your messaging stays broad and lands on deaf ears, your visuals stay safe, and you start attracting the wrong leads.

So here’s who I’m a fit for:

I work best with:
- Owner-led hospitality businesses (fishing lodges, boutique stays, restaurants, guide ops) that have the product figured out, but the brand doesn’t match it.
- Operators who want offer + positioning clarity so marketing stops being vague.
- Businesses aiming to raise rates, attract better-fit guests, and grow direct bookings.
- Owners who want a partner to lead decisions and move fast (not design-by-vote).

I don’t work best with:
- Projects with split decision-making and unclear ownership
- Exploration that never converges on a decision
- Teams that want consensus more than outcomes

Note: This is about how I work best, not a dig at past projects.

What I do:
I help you get clear on what you do, who it’s for, and why it’s different. Then I build a brand system (strategy + identity + rollout assets) that makes you look established everywhere your business shows up.

I build for this space because I live in it. I fish multiple times a week and spend my summers traveling, so I know what gets attention, what feels real, and what gets ignored. That translates into stronger trust signals, better-fit guests, and more direct bookings.

After spending some time scrolling on the business side of the internet tonight, I’ve realized that we’ve turned ourselves into a graveyard of clones.

Everyone is using the same scripts, the same "I help X do Y" templates, and the same fake "professional" smiles.

It’s boring. It’s safe. And it’s exactly why most brands are failing.

If you’re a designer or a business owner and you’re hiding behind a template, you’re not building a brand you’re building a barrier.

People don't want "service providers" in 2026. They want people with a backbone. They want someone who actually has an opinion and isn't afraid to say it.

That’s why I started Portal. I don't "optimize synergy." I build portals to the future of your business.

Going forward and my advice for 2026? Stop trying to blend in so you don’t offend anyone.
If you aren't confident enough to believe you're the best at what you do, why should anyone else believe you?

Show some personality. Show some edge. Be blunt.

In a world of noise, being an actual human is the only thing that’s going to differentiate you and make you any money.

Either build something that matters, or get out of the way.

Your current price tag is a reflection of your comfort zone, not your competence.

You don't need more training. You need more conviction.

There are people doing exactly what you do, charging ten times more, and sleeping soundly at night. The difference isn't the work, it’s the belief behind it.

Stop asking for permission to take up space. Find the rooms where your "ambitious" goals are just another Tuesday.

There is no growth without exposure. When you decide to level up, you operate by a higher set of rules before you have the results to prove you belong there. You stop being just another "hand for hire" and start being a partner.

That ‘foolish’ feeling that comes with it is just the down-payment on your future reputation. It is the internal tax you pay for holding yourself to a higher standard before the rest of the world sees it.

To survive the "Day One" silence and reach a "Year Two" reputation, you need a system, not just a talent.

The bridge between feeling foolish and being professional is a process:

1. Stop Defending Prices: When a client pushes back on cost, don't justify your "time." Pivot to the Business Goal you must achieve.

2. Show the Workings: Don't just send an example. Send the "Logic." Explain why Option A solves their problem and Option B doesn't.

3. Control the Room: Set the next milestone before they hang up. Momentum is the only thing that kills the "Day One" silence.

The foolishness is temporary. The reputation is permanent.

Keep building.

Most growing businesses don’t stall because of a lack of effort.
They stall quietly, in ways you barely notice until it costs you.

Revenue is up, but growth feels fragile.
Leads come in, but not the ones you actually want.
You’re working harder than ever, yet momentum still slips through your fingers.

The old tricks that got you here, like word of mouth, a quick logo, or posting when you have time, suddenly isn’t enough.

The friction isn’t in your marketing.
It’s in how your business shows up.

If growth feels harder than it should, your brand is the reason why.

Curious what’s holding your business back? Let’s talk.

BUSINESS OWNERS

As a brand designer, my work is more than just creating a logo or selecting a font. I help businesses grow by solving real challenges through strategy, messaging, positioning, and building brands that actually drive results.

With the launch of Portal, I’m expanding the services I offer and want to hear from you: what’s costing you the most time, money, or sleep when it comes to your brand or growing your business?

Maybe it’s hours spent tweaking content that doesn’t convert, revenue lost because your messaging isn’t clear, or stress from keeping your brand consistent as your business scales.

Comment below or send me a DM. Your insights will shape the solutions I create for businesses like yours.

A huge thank you to everyone who’s supported my design work these past couple of months. It means a lot.
Today, I’m excited to share a fresh new look for the studio.
Portal is the same studio you know, just with a cleaner, more professional identity that better reflects the work we do.
I’d love to hear what you think of the new look!

Your business can’t afford to confuse art and design.

Art expresses.
Design drives results.

Art asks: “Do you like this?”
Design asks: “Does this make people take action?”

Confusing the two costs you: missed leads, lost sales, and time spent on visuals that don’t perform.

The fix: strategic design built to get results—clarifying your message, building credibility, and guiding your audience to act.

If you’re ready to turn your visuals into a growth engine for your brand, let’s talk.

Contest winner reveal: North Star Snow Services, in Prince George, BC.

The winner of this year's student contest was a 15-year-old who's trying to make more than just pocket money this winter. He's trying to stack enough work to make real progress toward a truck. Instead of sending him out with another generic Facebook post and a phone number, we built a mini brand launch kit that makes him look legitimate from day one. A clean logo system, a badge mark for socials, and a small set of ads he can run immediately.

The problem was never work ethic. It was perception.

Most service posts online look the same. Random photos, random fonts, inconsistent names, and no clear way to book. That forces people to judge on price alone, and it turns every job into a who’s cheapest today situation.

This brand fixes that. It makes the offer clear at a glance, builds trust fast, and gives him a consistent look across posts, flyers, and decals. When the weather hits, he is the one people remember, message, and recommend. More trust, more repeat customers, and less scrambling for work when things slow down.

The interesting part is how little it takes to look professional. When your name, visuals, and message are consistent, people assume you are reliable before they even talk to you. This is how a small service business stops fighting for scraps and starts booking better customers at better rates.

If you run a service business and you are tired of getting treated like a commodity, message me. I build brand systems that make you look established, stand apart from the random Facebook posts, and help you charge what you are worth.

Picture this.

You’ve got 4–5 customers, and the work swings depending on which one of you and your competitors is offering the best deal that week. Every job is $300. You’re doing good work, but you keep hearing “too expensive” because customers lump you in with everyone else.

So you decide to stop getting dragged into price wars. You make the unpopular choice. You raise your rates, and all of a sudden buyers stop comparing you to the cheapest option.

Two customers leave for the cheaper guy. That’s expected. They weren’t buying quality, they were buying a number. The three who stay are buying you for a reason: reliability, communication, clean results, and no surprises. That’s also why the conversation changes fast. Price shoppers ask for discounts. Serious clients ask about process, timelines, and expectations.

Now the math makes sense.

Three jobs at $500 pays what five jobs at $300 used to. Less running. More margin. More time to deliver a better experience. And that better experience creates stronger referrals, because your clients aren’t embarrassed to recommend “the cheapest guy.” They’re proud to recommend the safe choice.

Then you build back to five jobs again and you’re not just busier. You’re profitable.

$300 x 5 = $1,500
$500 x 5 = $2,500

Same workload. Different tier.

That’s what branding does.

It makes you non-comparable, so buyers stop shopping you like a deal and start hiring you like a decision.

If you want that positioning, message me.

We’ve got our winner for this winter’s Youth Startup Spot – a 15-year-old who’s out shoveling snow to save for his first truck. Huge shoutout to his mom Savannah Thomassen for putting his name forward.

Over the next couple of weeks I’ll build him a simple mini brand around his snow shoveling business: a logo, a basic brand sheet, a flyer he can hand out, and a post his family can share so neighbours know how to book him.

Once everything’s dialed in, I’ll share the brand so you can see how treating even a small side gig like a real business can change the way people see it and help you earn more.

Want to see how branding turns $1 into $5?

Picture a local waterfront restaurant everyone talks about for the food, not the look. The sign is tired, the menus don’t match, and tourists keep drifting to the place next door that simply looks more put together.

They invest a few thousand into a proper brand pack. New sign, clean menus, a look and feel that finally matches what comes out of the kitchen.

Nothing else changes. Same crew. Same recipes. Same building.

But now a few more people stop instead of walking past. A couple of extra full tables a day. That can easily turn into around $500 more a week, or roughly $26,000 more a year.

That’s how brand design quietly turns $1 in… into $5 (or more) back.

If you want your branding doing that kind of work for your business, message me.
