"I don't bother with social media; in fact, I don't need to market my business. I get all of my clients from referrals and word of mouth."
I hear this all the time ๐ซฃ
And I have to tell you... it's a risky move.
Word of mouth is not a marketing strategy. In fact, it's the exact opposite. It puts the growth of your business directly into the hands of other people.
You have no control over who they tell, what they say, or when. It's a byproduct of doing good work (which of course matters, but it's just not a strategy.)
Neither is posting on Instagram.
I know that's not what you want to hear, especially if you've been doing both, and they've been working, kind of, some of the time.
But if your pipeline feels inconsistent, if you're riding waves of busy and slow with no idea why, I'd ask you, honestly: do you have a strategy, or do you have a few things you do and hope for the best?
The reality for most businesses is that what they think is marketing, actually isn't.
And what they don't think is important for consumers, actually is.
That's why at Blue Whale we look at the full picture. Internal AND external. Social media AND your PR campaign. Newsletters AND what communications go out after someone books a call with you.
All of it matters. And if you're currently relying on word of mouth and a few Instagram posts here and there, you're going to be left scratching your head when suddenly it feels like it "isn't working anymore".
Fix those gaps before you even notice they're there, and the second half of 2026 will feel like someone waved a magic wand for you ๐
This is a judgement-free zone, and I'm curious: are you guilty of relying on word of mouth? Where do YOU think the biggest gaps in your marketing and communications lie?
Let's talk about it ๐๐ป
