Nobody put Instagram in charge of the art world. It just started acting like the curator, and we all handed it the keys.

Look at who's actually in there. You post a new painting and it lands between someone's lunch and a dog video, gets about nine seconds, and then the feed swallows it whole. Your followers are mostly other artists, and your family. Your reach is whatever the algorithm feels generous enough to give you that morning. You made the work. An app decides if anyone sees it.

Collectors are not scrolling Reels hoping to trip over a painting. When someone actually wants to buy art, a gift, a piece for that empty wall in the hallway, they don't open Instagram. They Google it. "Abstract art near me." "Local artist prints." They're not browsing. They're looking. For exactly the kind of thing you make.

That's the difference. Instagram is a room full of artists showing each other their work. Google is a room full of people who want to buy it, asking where to find you.

So keep the pretty grid if you love it. But if you want to get found, put your art somewhere a buyer can actually reach it: on your own site, showing up the moment they search. Nobody can bury that, and it's yours.

I just finished a series called Foggy Fundy. Displayed it at the Saint John Art Club gallery, sat with it during my shift, and here's the full report: a few people came in, maybe one actually looked, nothing sold.

Another member described my work "atmospheric." Still deciding if that's a compliment or a sign I should start wearing my glasses. :)
