🇨🇦 Tim Hortons Says It Will Hire 10,000 Local Workers

Tim Hortons says it plans to hire 10,000 local workers across Canada while reducing its use of temporary foreign workers.

The company says the goal is to create more opportunities for Canadians, especially younger workers looking for entry-level jobs.

This comes at a time when many young people are saying it has become harder to find part-time and summer work, even in industries that used to be easier to get into.

Tim Hortons says some of these jobs will come from new restaurant openings, while others will be filled across existing locations.

What do you think — should large companies be doing more to hire local workers first?

📉 University Faces $14M Gap After Enrolment Fall

Algoma University is projecting a $14-million operating deficit for the 2026–27 year, as student enrolment sees a sharp decline.

The university says full-time student numbers are expected to fall from 13,600 in 2023–24 to just over 3,200 this year, with international enrolment dropping by more than 50%. Despite the financial hit, officials say the school remains stable, with reserve funds available and no debt.

To manage the shortfall, the university plans to cut around $23 million in non-salary expenses, including travel, software, and other operational costs. Tuition increases are also being introduced, with a 2% rise for domestic students and a planned 5% increase for international students.

At the same time, the university is continuing to invest in long-term projects, including new campus developments, while working toward stabilizing finances and rebuilding enrolment in the coming years.

🎨 Artists are being invited to help transform the city

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is calling on artists to apply for a chance to create three new murals as part of this year’s VIVID ArtFest, happening September 17 to 19, 2026.

The project aims to bring more colour and creativity to public spaces while highlighting the region’s diversity. Artists selected will have the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the city through large-scale public artwork.

Applications are open to artists across Canada, though priority will be given to those connected to Northern Ontario. Submissions require a portfolio, references, and past experience.

The city is also looking for property owners willing to host murals on their buildings, expanding the reach of the project throughout the community.

Applications close May 15 at 4:30 p.m., giving artists a limited window to be part of this year’s public art expansion.

💼 $500K investment aims to strengthen Sault’s economy

The Ontario government is investing $500,000 into Sault Ste. Marie to help the city adapt to ongoing U.S. tariffs and build a more resilient economy.

The funding, announced by Vic Fedeli, will support efforts to diversify local industries and reduce reliance on U.S. trade. The plan includes expanding into sectors like defence, aerospace, critical minerals, and advanced manufacturing, while also strengthening local supply chains.

City officials say tariffs have hit the region especially hard due to its close economic ties with the U.S., particularly in industries like steel and forestry. The funding will help develop new strategies to attract investment, grow export markets, and open opportunities beyond a single trade partner.

Mayor Matthew Shoemaker says the goal is to position the city for long-term growth while navigating one of the most challenging economic periods in recent years.

📱 Phones could be banned all day in Ontario schools

The Ontario government is considering a full ban on cellphones across school property—not just in classrooms, but for the entire school day.

Education Minister Paul Calandra says growing concerns about distractions are driving the discussion, with officials pointing to increasing evidence that phone use is affecting learning.

But not everyone agrees with the idea. Some educators and parents support stricter rules, while others say a total ban could be hard to enforce and overlook how much students rely on technology for schoolwork and communication.

Ontario already introduced limits in 2024, requiring younger students to keep phones stored all day and older students to use them only during breaks, with some exceptions.

Now, the province is exploring going even further—while the debate around what works best for students continues.

⚠️ Alcohol bottles could soon come with stronger warnings

A new proposal from Algoma Public Health is pushing for mandatory health labels on all alcohol sold in Canada. The goal is simple: make the risks more visible right where people make their choices.

Health officials say alcohol-related harm is still a major concern. In Algoma alone, more than half of adults exceed recommended drinking limits, and heavy drinking rates are higher than the provincial average. Across Canada, alcohol is linked to over 17,000 deaths and nearly 120,000 hospital stays each year—and it’s classified as a known carcinogen.

The proposal would require clear, rotating warnings on bottles, along with standard drink information and guidance to help reduce health risks. It’s being sent to federal leaders as part of support for Bill S-202.

Supporters point to past efforts like to***co warnings, which helped reduce smoking rates over time. But the conversation isn’t simple. While some are calling for stricter labeling, alcohol access has expanded in places like Ontario, raising questions about how these policies will align.

If approved, the changes would come from Health Canada, setting nationwide rules for how alcohol products are labeled moving forward.

“🌉 Canada’s longest suspension bridge is reopening soon

If you’re up for a little adventure, Eagle Canyon is getting ready to welcome visitors back for the season starting May 15.

The main attraction stretches 600 feet across the canyon and stands 152 feet above the ground, making it the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the country. There’s also a second bridge nearby, about half the length, offering another scenic way to take in the views.

Beyond the bridges, visitors can explore hiking trails, walk along the canyon lake, and take in the surrounding wilderness. It’s a full outdoor experience, not just a quick stop.

Located about 45 minutes east of Thunder Bay, the site will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through mid-October, with admission fees for entry.

If you’ve been thinking about a northern Ontario trip, this might be your sign.
