OVERNIGHT CONSTRUCTION APPROVED FOR AIRPORT HEIGHTS ROUNDABOUT PROJECT
(June 3rd)

Overnight construction work will soon be permitted at one of St. John’s busiest traffic corridors as crews continue work on the long-awaited roundabout near the airport.

During a recent council meeting, St. John’s City Council approved extended construction hours at the intersection of Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive. The area has been undergoing major upgrades for the last several years as part of a project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety through the installation of a roundabout.

The city say allowing contractors to complete work overnight is expected to reduce congestion and lessen delays for motorists travelling through the area during peak daytime hours.

The city noted that nearby residents have shown patience throughout the ongoing construction project and said the overnight work is not expected to create significant disturbances for those living nearby.

Also made light of the traffic situation, commenting that many drivers navigating the area have become quite familiar with the zipper merge after months of lane reductions and shifting traffic patterns.

Construction in the area is expected to continue as crews work toward completing the roundabout project.
