Yesterday, the County of Stettler Housing Authority board and management hosted a BBQ at the Stettler Community Hall to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Alberta Seniors' Week.

Do you have a parent, grandparent, or special senior in your life you'd like to celebrate?

Send us a photo and a short note of appreciation, and we will publish it in The Rural Alberta Report as part of our Seniors' Week recognition feature.

Please make sure all people in the photo are identified.

Email submissions to [email protected] by Sunday, June 14.

Help us recognize the seniors who have made a difference in our families and communities.

Rainy weather did little to dampen spirits as nearly 300 people gathered at the Stettler Community Hall on June 2 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Alberta Seniors' Week.

Advisory Note: After 3 Days of Heavy Rain on Planters

✅ Steps to Do

1. Check drainage – Ensure planter holes aren’t blocked. Tilt pots slightly to let excess water run out.
2. Remove standing water – Empty saucers, trays, or cachepots immediately.
3. Assess soil moisture – Insert a finger 2–3 inches deep. If soggy, gently aerate soil with a chopstick (avoid root damage).
4. Move to shelter – Place planters under cover until soil dries to a damp (not wet) consistency.
5. Inspect roots & leaves – Trim any mushy, blackened roots or yellowing/rotting foliage.

❌ Steps to Avoid

1. Don’t fertilize – Waterlogged roots can’t absorb nutrients; fertilizer may burn or encourage pathogens.
2. Don’t repot immediately – Stress + wet soil increase transplant shock. Wait until soil is nearly dry.
3. Don’t place in harsh sun – Sudden bright light after rain can scorch stressed leaves. Opt for bright shade.
4. Don’t water again – Let the plant dry out significantly before next watering (may take 1–2 weeks).

Watch for warning signs over the next week: wilting, mold on soil, foul odor, or fungus gnats. Act quickly if seen.
