If I had to rebuild a local business's marketing from scratch on 500 dollars a month, none of it would go to ads.

It would go to making sure every inquiry that already arrives gets answered fast, tracked, and followed up more than once.

Almost every business I look at is buying more leads while leaking the ones it already has. Ads make that leak bigger and more expensive.

Ads are an amplifier. Amplifying a broken process just makes the failure louder.

Canadian owners keep getting one thing wrong about CASL, and it quietly costs them.

They read it as "we cannot email anyone". So they send nothing, and a list of past customers goes stale.

What it actually restricts is unsolicited commercial email to people who have no relationship with you. It does not stop you contacting someone who bought from you, asked you for a quote, or gave you permission. Those lanes are open, with limits on how long, and every message needs your real identity and a working unsubscribe.

The businesses getting hurt by CASL are not the ones being fined. They are the ones who read a headline in 2014 and stopped talking to their own customers.

The most expensive record in your CRM is the customer who bought from you last year and has not heard a word since.

You already paid to acquire them. They already trusted you enough to hand over money once. And the reason they have not come back is usually not that they found someone better. It is that nobody reminded them you exist.

Under Canadian anti-spam rules you can generally contact a past customer for up to two years after the transaction. Most businesses let that window close and never send anything.

Zero to live in seven days is a real timeline, but not for the reason people assume.

Building it is not the slow part. The slow part is deciding what happens to a lead once it lands, and that call belongs to the owner, not to us.

So we run the week backwards. Day one is not design. Day one is mapping every way a person can reach you and what should happen in the first five minutes of each one. Once that is settled, the rest is assembly.

When a build runs late it is almost never the technology. It is that nobody had agreed who calls the customer back.

Businesses up here compete on a different clock than the GTA.

In Toronto, a customer who does not hear back within the hour has four other tabs open. Here they might wait until Monday, because they know there are only two of you.

That sounds like an advantage. It is one, right up until a national competitor with a 24 hour intake line starts advertising into your market. Then the customer who used to wait finds out they do not have to.

The local relationship is real and worth defending. It is just not a substitute for answering the phone.

Before Frayze I ran the lead engine for a multi-rooftop auto group. Six locations, a quarter million automations a month.

The thing that moved the number was not the clever part. It was response time.

We did not write better ads. We made sure that when someone filled a form at 9:40 on a Tuesday night, something answered before they closed the tab. That single change did more than any campaign in the budget.

Speed is unglamorous. It is also the one advantage a smaller shop can take off a bigger competitor without outspending them.

Most AI chatbots on small business sites are answering questions nobody needed answered.

They handle "what do you do" and "what are your hours". Both are already on the page the visitor is reading.

The question that decides the sale is "can you do my specific thing, and when". That one needs to reach a human, or a system that actually knows your calendar and your capacity. A generic bot cannot answer it, so it deflects, and the visitor leaves.

If you are shopping for one, ask the vendor a single question: what happens when someone asks something it cannot answer. If the answer is "it collects their email", you have bought a slower contact form.

Check one thing this week. Send yourself a quote out of your own system and hit reply.

If that reply lands in a mailbox nobody opens, or bounces off a no-reply address, you have a leak. Every customer who had one question and replied instead of calling is sitting in there.

They did not go cold because your price was wrong. They went cold because the answer never came.

This takes four minutes to test. It is the most common gap I find.

Every agency says it uses AI now. Almost none of them will show you the screen.

So here is ours, with the client names blurred and nothing else touched. Thirty-one live workspaces. Eleven domains. Twenty-two jobs that run whether or not anyone remembers them.

We left the red on the board on purpose. Two jobs are failing today and the console says so on its own front page. An all-green dashboard usually means nobody is looking at it.

The console itself came together in about two days. It took months to earn those two days.
