Happy Saturday everyone, we hope you’ve been having a great day so far! We’ve got some rebranding projects made by our grads for you today ✏️

Toronto Botanical Gardens Rebrand by Rose Zhang. Rose redesigned the brand identity system of The Toronto Botanical Gardens (TBG). The concept for the new brand identity was to emphasize the TBG’s mission, “to connect people to plants, inspiring us to live in harmony with nature,” by re-aligning their identity and goals to reflect a down-to-earth, lighthearted, friendly and humanitarian relationship with the community.

Continuing with more talented YSDN students’ work, we have some Motion Graphic Projects to share! 💫

Watcher of the Wild by Cass Crawford. Starting originally as a book project, I took Watcher of the Wild and wanted to see how I could translate it to motion. Watcher of the Wild is an abstract and more whimsical take on the effects of deforestation and our environment. The images were all drawn by me and were inspired by old paper puppet shows.

Stop Asian Hate by Michael Huh. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the former President of the United States called the Coronavirus “the Chinese virus” in a public address to the people of America. This caught the attention of many news outlets, citing it as being blatantly xenophobic, racist, and problematic. Early Asian immigrants were subject to untrue propaganda: maliciously associating the Asian community with disease and illness. There is a history of this and 2020 was no exception, with over 2120 anti-Asian hate incidents reported resulting in a nearly 1900% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes.

Dear Mom Film: Typeface Design by Dylan Lorriman. In typeface design I had the opportunity to develop a custom font for a short film titled “Dear Mom”. The short film revolves around the complexities involved in mother-daughter relationships. The film incorporates an experimental approach to visuals and colours, however, all confessions and topics discussed within the film are real events and were anonymously submitted by real women. As visuals for this film may sometimes seem lighthearted at initial glance, the scenes are curated and developed to express the deep rooted physical and emotional trauma that these individuals have endured throughout their childhood.

The First Time I Meditated by Chelsea Shum. mindfulness is often seen as ‘boring’ and ‘not for me’. During the months of isolation due to Covid-19, Chelsea gave it an honest attempt which took months of practicing this habit. During school, Chelsea had the freedom to make a motion design project on any project and in this opportunity choose mindfulness. The soft colours, playful illustration style, soothing music, and relaxing animations convey a sense of peace to the audience, hopefully encouraging them to try meditation as well.

The Dangers of E-Waste by Felicity Jung. The objective of this project was to design a narrative outlining a global issue, as well as provide resources to engage and educate the reader. The solution was to design a clean and organized narrative to educate the reader and bring awareness to the issue. As well, this document focuses on accessibility. The colours used in this design are colour blind safe, it uses optical character recognition and alternate text.

Have Your Say by Lucas Postlethwaite. Have Your Say is a proof-of-concept, easy-to-use web platform that aggregates information for new developments, projects, community consultations, and engagement resources in the City of Toronto—making it easier for residents to inform themselves and voice their opinions about the changes being made to their neighbourhood. By designing a modular, user-friendly interface, residents can quickly take in new information about their interests, and translate that knowledge into civic action.

The Problem with Plastic by Serina Uncao. This project is a digital publication that focuses on Resin Identification Codes (RIC). These codes are used to facilitate recycling processes as they provide information about the kind of plastic being recycled. RICs are typically located at the bottom of plastic products, including takeout containers and plastic water bottles. The Problem With Plastic uses a narrative approach to encourage consumers to learn about single-use plastic products and to petition for better regulations and identification systems. Rooted in research on RICs and recycling processes in Canada, this infographic engulfs the reader in a six step experience that pairs graphics with real information in an easily digestible way. The narrative begins with (1) purchasing a plastic product, (2) using it, (3) recycling it, (4) learning about recycling processes, (5) being exposed to the truth, and (6) learning how to make change through Government of Canada petitions.
