You might be surprised by our preference considering our name is Treehugger. In the end, it comes down to plastic.
Real trees are a renewable resource and more will be planted which is actually better for the environment. They support local farms and encourage families and friends to participate in an outdoor activity. They are also biodegradable and can be used as compost, mulch or firewood.
Artificial trees are made of plastic and mostly produced in Asia.
Fake trees are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which cannot be recycled. Fake trees are only ever incinerated or landfilled after their (too-) short lifespan, typically 7-8 years. They could last much longer, but people tend to get tired of them and buy new ones.
Real trees, on the other hand, are usually mulched by municipalities and used as compost in urban gardens.
The verdict: Real trees are considered the eco-friendlier option.
It doesn't have to be such a black-and-white debate, however.
Remember to always use what you have and that includes a fake tree. And if cutting down a tree isn't for you there are alternatives, such as potted live trees and live tree rentals, which sidestep both the issue of importing non-recyclable plastic and killing a healthy tree.Β
