It’s Disability Pride Month and what doesn’t get talked about enough is accessible content. For people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, or low vision, there are some simple ways to create a more inclusive and accessible environment.

However, not all disabilities are visible, so it is important to listen to all disabled people from across the spectrum. ⁣

Our 6 Tips 👇🏻⁣

1. ADD ALT TEXT: ⁣
This text is a physical description of an image for search engines and screen readers.
⁣
2. INSERT CAPTIONS:⁣
Captions are text that transcribe or give context to the auditory part of a video.
⁣
3. USE CAMEL CASE:⁣
This is the practice of capitalizing the first letter of each word in a phrase without spaces, such as a hashtag, to make each word clear. For example: DisabilityPrideMonth is better than disabilitypridemonth.⁣
⁣
4. BE STRATEGIC WITH EMOJIS:⁣
Although it is common to use emojis as bullet points, they can actually be confusing to screen readers. Move them to the end.

5. USE HIGH CONTRASTING COLOURS⁣
For visuals, high contrasting colours make it easier for users with colour vision deficiency to read the information. Readability beats out aesthetics in this case! Keep in mind, though, that too much contrast is also unpleasant for some people.⁣

6. BE INCLUSIVE WITH VISUALS⁣
Visuals containing authentic disabled people help normalize disabilities and foster a more inclusive community. Leaving out disabled people from images excludes over 15% of the world’s population! ⁣

Do you have TikTok?

When did you download it?

If you were one of the many who flocked to the short form video app during the peak of the pandemic, you probably understand why.

▶️ We’re bored in the house and in the house bored. Videos provide entertainment value that distracts us from our isolation and loneliness. When we watch videos, especially videos where people speak directly to us, it can feel like we are hanging out with a friend.

▶️ We’re lonely. Sometimes the only other face we see (particularly who live alone) are those at the grocery store or colleagues via Zoom. As humans, we desire human connection. When we see other faces, it humanizes the viewing experience for us.

▶️ We have a short attention span. Quick videos do it for us. Why else do we despise “Part 2” videos? We want to know everything in 60 seconds or you’ve lost us.

▶️ We are tired of disingenuous content. We want authenticity. We want to listen to people we trust. We love stories. TikTok is filled with users who make videos because they enjoy it. Although advertising does occur on the platform and some seek ‘clout’, the primary purpose of TikTok is for users to express themselves and hope they find their tribe while doing it.

Last year, the unemployment rate for recent grads with a university degree doubled! 🤯

Businesses closed down, job offers were retracted, and students were robbed of their convocations. 😔 Despite the lack of opportunities, grads persevered, proving that they are unstoppable.

Did you believe us without checking? 😉

This is why fact-checking is important. In a world where ‘fake news’ became a literal term, we bear the responsibility to do our part—and that includes verifying information before posting about it. Shareable content is great, but if it’s inaccurate it can cause issues.

It’s not just news either. How many people base their strategies on tips that we just saw on Instagram and have NO IDEA where they came from? 🤷‍♀️

Based on a survey conducted by Visme, only 40% of content marketers 'always' fact check other’s work before sharing.

🤯 Crazy huh.

But with demanding schedules and the need to push out content rapidly, it can be easy to see why false information may slip through the cracks.
