Smorgasburg is the largest weekly open-air food market in America, attracting thousands of people to New York, LA and Miami each weekend to eat from dozens of local vendors. This summer, Smorgasburg will launch the first-ever international weekly market in Toronto!

SOD Graphic Design students Christina Kim and Kendra Legault designed 36 illustrations representing dishes served at Smorgasburg. With the support of the SOD makerlab, they also executed the painting of the tables with the stencil designs.
Christina was also given the opportunity to design a label and logo for Smorgasbeer, which will be exclusively sold at ➡️ Visit their page for more details!

Repost has taken action on regarding an important issue within the design community:

🌐 payinterns.design

"the conversation surrounding unpaid design internships has gained traction over the last few years. this has been compounded by the rising cost of living across toronto. hiring an intern without fair compensation underscores an already problematic message about the value of creative and strategic work in the world.

more importantly, unpaid internships are exploitative and undermine diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts— simply put they often cater to those who can afford to undertake unpaid work. in an industry that requires long overdue action for equity-deserving folks, we need to hold studios and leaders accountable.

today i’m launching what i hope will be an ongoing database of the companies and studios across toronto that are committed to paying design and creative interns. want to talk about the project, get added to the list, or just send good vibes to the next generation of designers? get at me ✌🏼"•

Hi, my name is Emma Keat,

I’m a second-year graphic design student here at George brown, also one of the co-hosts on the new podcast, SODTalks.

I have always been a creative person, painting, drawing, playing music, acting. I knew going into post-secondary that I wanted to do something that involved thinking creatively, and also knew that I wanted to get a job after graduating school.

I took the Arts and Design Foundations course at GBC, fell in love with design, and knew I needed to continue my education here at GBC. The atmosphere at GBC and the fact that the teachers actually care were big deciding factors.

Right now I’m trying to figure out whether I want to pick advertising or corporate design for the rest of my GBC journey. I’m sure other second-year students can relate to the feeling of not know enough information to make the decision. Go listen to SODTalks, we have an episode where we talk to two third-year students about their decision. We also have a new episode coming out, where we’re talking with a couple of teachers about the difference between the workflow and environment in advertisement and corporate firms.

I’m missing being around everyone on campus, seeing everyone’s beautiful faces, and meeting new creative people. But hopefully, soon we all can be reunited and design under the same roof again
