In B2B sales, everyone tells you to automate and scale.
But sometimes, the fastest way to grow is to do things that don’t scale.

Before you build complex automations, you need to build deep customer relationships.

That means:
~ Handcrafting highly personalized outreach
~ Spending hours on manual discovery calls
~ Doing whatever it takes to make your early clients successful

These activities don't scale, but they give you the raw feedback and insight you need to nail your messaging. To scale later, you have to do the manual work now.

Where do your clients buy?

It sounds like a simple question, but getting the answer wrong can quietly stall a startup's growth for months.

What’s changed in startup sales over the last 13 years? (And what hasn’t?)

We were digging through the VA Partners archives recently and came across a white paper we published all the way back in 2013: "Building a Startup Sales Team."

As you can imagine, the tactical landscape has evolved dramatically since then. Back in 2013, we weren't talking about AI in marketing, modern research tools for outbound prospecting, or optimizing Google Analytics.

Today, that is exactly what drives many modern B2B business strategies.

Yet, the core human elements haven't shifted an inch. When you look at the frameworks of scaling a young B2B team, the fundamentals remain the same:

👉 The Right Hire Profile: Knowing exactly what traits to look for and how to interview a candidate specifically for a fast-paced startup sales role.
👉 Immediate Contribution: Having a practical plan to get your new salesperson onboarded and contributing right away.
👉 The Compensation Plan: Building a solid foundational compensation structure that aligns incentives and keeps reps motivated.

Technology and analytics should amplify your strategy, not replace the fundamentals. Our blueprint from over a decade ago still holds true today.

Besides the obvious, do you see any other changes or things that have stayed the same? Check out the classic guide and let us know what you think!

A 3-year sales cycle. No, that’s not a typo.

We recently helped a customer close a major new client. The timeline? Multiple meetings, calls, and demos stretching all the way back to February 2023.

It definitely wasn't a "quick win," but it highlights a massive reality check for companies: the B2B sales process is a long game.

Where do most companies miss out? They give up too early. They think 3 emails are enough, or that a target going dark means they hate the product. In reality, modern B2B buying decisions involve 6 to 10 stakeholders, shifting budget cycles, and internal red tape.

If you want to turn more prospects into customers, you need persistence, multi-threading, and a willingness to stay the course.

Steve breaks down the strategy behind surviving the long close in our latest blog post:

Think a 3-year sales cycle is impossible? Discover why B2B sales success requires persistence, multi-threading, and playing the long game.

For us, success means making a real impact where it matters most.

How does your organization give back? We’d love to hear about your initiatives in the comments!

How do early-stage tech ventures navigate the jump from a successful pilot to a sustainable partnership?

It takes a mix of the right strategy, regional connections, and direct access to decision-makers.

On June 16th, Altitude Accelerator is bringing Ontario’s innovation ecosystem together for Founders & Funders 2026 at Brampton City Hall. It’s a high-impact afternoon designed to help tech founders build visibility, understand what investors are looking for right now, and unlock new customer procurement pathways.

At VA Partners, we’re big advocates for the hands-on advisory and community support that helps companies navigate these scaling challenges. If you're a founder working to get to that next level, this is an excellent opportunity to make the right connections.

If you’re a Canadian Gen X’er, you probably remember the track “Salesmen, Cheats and Liars.”

Our Co-founder, Mark Elliott, was at a Lowest of the Low concert recently, and hearing that song reminded him of a massive hurdle for modern startup growth.

Too many founders let that exact stereotype hold them back, saying: “I don’t want to be too salesy.”

But avoiding outbound sales is actively hurting your business. As an early mentor taught Mark, “In the absence of revenue, there can be no profit.”
