Wow, we must admit, that the number 8... of not properly secured children is somewhat shocking. I can attest to being at a number of serious MVC's and none of them were "planned" and most occur very close to your own area going on a nearby errand.
Great work Truro Police Service in raising awareness of this still happening in 2026. As a first responder, I see an alarming increase in distracted driving collisions which result in bad injuries on residential type roads.
Please make sure you know the new updated laws as of today. We will provide a separate link today. For now here is one to use:

"Of particular concern, 8 tickets were issued to drivers operating a motor vehicle while a passenger under the age of 16 was not properly secured in a child restraint system or wearing an available seatbelt."
On Saturday evening, members of the Truro Police Service conducted several road safety checkstops throughout the community. During the enforcement initiative, officers issued a total of 17 Summary Offence Tickets for various motor vehicle offences.
Of particular concern, 8 tickets were issued to drivers operating a motor vehicle while a passenger under the age of 16 was not properly secured in a child restraint system or wearing an available seatbelt.
The children involved ranged in age from approximately 2 to 6 years old, and none were using any type of seatbelt or child restraint device. In one instance, officers discovered a young child lying on the floor in the rear seating area of a vehicle.
The Truro Police Service wishes to remind the public that seatbelts and child restraint systems are designed to protect vehicle occupants from serious injury or death in the event of a collision.
Ensuring children are properly secured is not only a legal requirement, but a critical responsibility for every driver.
When a child is not properly restrained, even a minor collision can have devastating consequences. Taking a few moments to ensure children are safely secured before driving can make the difference between life and death.
The Truro Police Service encourages all motorists to check that every occupant in their vehicle is wearing a seatbelt and that young children are using an appropriate child restraint system every time they travel. Child passenger safety is everyone's responsibility.
