Something shifts for your customers right around Labour Day. Summer wraps up, everyone falls back into their routines, and all the little things they put off over the summer suddenly jump to the top of the list.

The dentist visit they skipped. The repair they kept meaning to book. The health goal they will finally get to now that the kids are back in school. September is a quiet rush for a lot of local businesses, and most owners just let it roll past.

So here is one for this week. Pick one thing you would love more of in September, and get in front of it now. New patients, fall bookings, or one service you want to do more of. Write a simple post about it, put it on your website and socials, and send a friendly note to past customers who might need it. It does not have to be a big campaign. One clear message, out early, beats a great idea that shows up in October.

Getting ahead of seasonal demand instead of chasing it is a big part of what we do. Late August is the time to line it up.

What would you love more of this September?

Here is a simple one that quietly brings in new business. Your happiest customers would gladly leave you a review. They just never get asked.

That is really the whole secret. Reviews come from asking, not only from doing great work. And the best moment to ask is right after someone tells you how happy they are, while the good feeling is fresh.

So try this today. Think of your five most recent happy customers and send each a short, friendly note. Something like, so glad we could help, and if you have a minute, a quick review means a lot to a small business like ours, here is the link. Then paste the direct link to your Google review page so nobody has to go searching for it.

A handful of honest reviews does more than most people think. They help new customers choose you over the place down the street, and even the newer AI search tools read reviews now when they decide who to recommend. Looking at how a business shows up online, reviews included, is a big part of what we do.

When did you last simply ask a happy customer for a review?

Here is a five minute test that quietly makes a website work harder. Open your own homepage like you have never seen it before.

Ask a friend who knows nothing about your business to look at it for five seconds, then close the tab. Now ask them three simple things. What does this business do, where is it, and how would they get in touch. If they cannot answer all three, the homepage is working against you.

The fix is not fancy. Put one plain sentence right at the top that says what you do, who it is for, and where. Something like, friendly family dentist in Burnaby taking new patients. Then a phone number or a book now button they cannot miss.

The bonus, that same clear wording helps Google and the new AI search tools figure out who to recommend too. Looking at how a business shows up online, starting with the website, is a big part of what we do.

When did you last look at your own homepage like a first time visitor?

Here is a simple one that quietly makes people money. Your next great customer is often someone who already hired you once and was happy with the work.

Most of us move on the second a job wraps up, and those good past customers just go quiet. So try this today. Open your customer list and find ten people you have not heard from in the last six months to a year. Send each a short, friendly note. Not a pitch. Just a hello, a reminder you are still here, and maybe a small reason to come back. For a dentist that is a checkup nudge. For a trades business, a quick how did that repair hold up.

Bringing past customers back is some of the cheapest marketing there is, and it is why we build clients a simple system that remembers everyone and follows up at the right time. But you can start with nothing but ten names and ten minutes.

The best photo for your business this week is probably one you can take on your phone in the next ten minutes.

Not a stock photo. A real one. You on the job, your team, the finished work, a before and after. Customers trust real photos of real work far more than a glossy image of someone who does not actually work at your shop.

Here is a simple one for today. Snap five photos while you are working. Decent light, hold steady, done. Then put them to work on your website, your socials, and your ads. When we build ads for our clients, the honest, real looking ones almost always pull better than the polished stock stuff.

What is one photo from this week you could put to work?

When someone fills out your form or leaves you a message, a clock starts, and a lot of businesses do not realize it.

Here is the thing. The person who reached out almost never contacted only you. They probably messaged two or three businesses at the same time, and whoever answers first usually gets the work. If you wait until the end of the day to call back, you are often too late, because they have already booked someone else.

So try this today. Time yourself. Next time a lead comes in, notice how long it takes before a real person replies. If the honest answer is a few hours, that is business walking out the door. Even a quick text in the first few minutes, something like, got your message, I will call you within the hour, keeps you in the running.

The good news is you do not have to sit by your phone all day. Setting up fast, automatic follow up the moment a lead comes in, by text, email, or even a voice assistant that answers and books, is a big part of what we do for our clients. You can start today just by noticing how long you take.

You probably answer the same few questions on the phone all day. How much is it? Do you cover my area? How soon can you come? Those answers belong on your website, in plain everyday words.

Here is why it matters. Those exact questions are what people type into Google, and now what they ask AI tools too. When your site answers the real question the way a customer actually asks it, you are the business that shows up. When it does not, someone else is.

Try this today. Keep a sticky note by the phone and jot down every question a customer asks. By tomorrow you will have a ready made list. Turn each one into a short, honest answer on your site, a simple FAQ or a page for each question, no jargon.

Turning the questions you already answer into content that helps you get found is a big part of what we do for our clients. That sticky note is a great place to start.

What is the one question you get asked over and over?

If you are paying for ads, here is one of the easiest ways to lose that money: sending everyone who clicks over to your home page.

Think about why someone clicked. Your ad said something specific, like same day plumbing, or Invisalign for adults, or custom cabinets in Langley. That one thing is what they want right now. If they land on a general home page that covers everything you do, they have to dig around for it, and a lot of people just give up and leave.

Here is a free check for today. Find your main ad and click it yourself, the way a customer would. Does the page it opens match what the ad promised, right at the top? If it does not, send that ad to the page about that exact service instead. No page for it yet? That is a good sign you need one.

Lining up the ad, the click and the page is a big part of how we help our clients turn ad spend into real leads. You can check your own in about five minutes.

Where does your busiest ad send people right now?

Here is a two minute job for today: pull up your own website on your phone, not your computer.

Nearly all of your customers find you on a phone, usually in a rush. So look at the top of the screen. Is your phone number right there, and does it start a call when you tap it? If someone has to scroll, pinch, zoom, and copy the number out by hand, a lot of them will just give up and call the next business instead. You never see those lost calls.

The fix is quick. Ask whoever built your site to put your phone number, or a clear Book or Call button, at the very top, and make the number tappable so one press dials you.

Looking at your own site the way a customer does, on a phone, is one of the first things we check when we help a business get found. Give it a try this afternoon.

That person who asked about your prices last week and then went quiet? They are probably not a no.

We see this all the time with local businesses. Someone calls or fills out a form, you reply once, they go silent, and it is easy to assume they picked someone else. Sometimes they did. But often they just got busy. Life got in the way, they meant to reply and forgot. They are not a no. They are a not right now.

The fix is simple. Follow up again, then once more a few days later. A short, friendly, no pressure note like, "Hi, just checking in, happy to help whenever the timing works." Most businesses try once and stop, so the ones who gently follow up two or three times tend to win the job.

Here is something to try today. Pull up three quotes or leads that went cold this month and send one more message. That is it.

We help our clients automate this follow up so it happens on its own, but you can absolutely start by hand this afternoon.
