VMO Season Closing

Twenty-three seasons in, the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra closed its year under Music Director Ken Hsieh with a program so in demand, the Chan Centre needed additional seating.

A Canadian debut, a rarely performed Tchaikovsky symphony, and a standing ovation from a sold-out house closed out a season built on range and ambition.

Every issue begins slowly and gradually realizes itself: a folder of photos, a list of interviews, and a question I ask myself before a single page comes together. What is this issue actually about?

For seven years, the answer lived in elevated places and things. This time, designing the photo collages from each event we covered, I noticed something different happening. The rooms were beautiful, yes, but it was the people building them who kept pulling my attention: the advisor who spends more time listening than talking, the planner who can turn a golf tournament into an Amalfi coastline, the couple who waited a decade to make a single date permanent.

I did not set out to write a theme issue. I set out to be honest about what actually moves me when I curate, and it turned out to be conviction. The people in this issue did not stumble into what they do. They chose it, on purpose, and kept choosing it.

As I wrote in my letter this month: "This is our CELEBRATE issue, and it belongs to the people who keep this lifestyle worth living."

Welcome to our Summer CELEBRATE issue!

Folio.YVR is West Coast Canada's only luxury magazine with an international presence, and curating each issue has never been a formality for us. It is a labour of love, an undertaking of passion, built one relationship, one story, one carefully considered detail at a time encompassing a network 30 years in the making by our EIC.

This issue, that passion turns toward the people who make the West Coast lifestyle what it is: the ones who design the room, plan the evening, guide the gift, and show up for a client or a cause with a level of drive that rarely gets its due.

Every name in this issue chose, deliberately, to build something here, and we applaud them.
