Finding Beauty in Fukushima: Michael Kenna's Quiet Act of Regeneration

A photograph taken at dawn, in near silence, with the shutter open for minutes rather than a fraction of a second. That is how Michael Kenna has made his living for fifty years, and it is how he approached a place most of the world still associates with catastrophe.

Beautiful Fukushima brings 50 hand-printed, sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs to Kostuik Gallery, opening October 15 with the artist in attendance. The series marks fifteen years since the natural disasters of 2011 and stands as a testament to Fukushima's striking recovery.

BC Sips & Stories: The Irreverent Artistry of Blasted Church Vineyards

The Vancouver International Film Festival returns for its 45th year, and our curtain riser is here.

From October 1 to 11, 2026, VIFF will screen more than 160 films at venues across the city, including the Playhouse, the Cinematheque, the Park, the Rio, and VIFF's own cinema on Seymour Street. The Lindsay Family Stage on Granville Island joins the roster this year, extending the festival beyond the downtown core.

Highlights include Tony Gilroy's Behemoth! with Pedro Pascal, two major festival titles starring Berlinale Best Actress winner Sandra Hüller, and Smudge the Blades, the TIFF Best Canadian Discovery Award winner from Cody Lightning. Several screenings include Q&As with directors and producers.

VIFF also debuts its new "In Conversation With…" series, beginning with Emmy-nominated actress Carrie C**n, this year's recipient of the Luminary Award for distinguished achievement.

Vancouver Opera opens its 2026–2027 season with Puccini's Tosca — a thriller of passion, politics, and betrayal set in Rome, circa 1800.

Three performances only, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre: Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 PM, Thursday, October 29 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, November 1 at 2:00 PM.

This acclaimed co-production with Pacific Opera Victoria brings together Music Director Jacques Lacombe and stage director Brenna Corner, with soprano Joyce El-Khoury leading the cast as Floria Tosca alongside David Pomeroy and Gregory Dahl.

The season continues with The Barber of Seville in February and La Traviata in April and May — three productions, one unforgettable season.

Season tickets are available now, and single tickets for Tosca are on sale through the Vancouver Opera box office.
