Fun Fact: Why Is Google Called Google?
Before Google was Google, it was called BackRub.
The name referred to the way the search engine analyzed backlinks between websites. Technically, it made perfect sense.
But imagine saying:
“Just BackRub it.” 😄
Thankfully, the name changed.
Google was inspired by “googol” — the mathematical term for 1 followed by 100 zeros — representing the enormous amount of information its founders wanted to organize.
From a branding perspective, the result was brilliant: short, unusual and memorable.
So memorable, in fact, that it eventually became a verb:
“Google it.”
Sometimes a great brand name doesn't need to explain what you do. It just needs to be memorable enough to become yours.
