Synopsis: In the wake of the Thirty Years’ War, a taciturn, disfigured soldier (Sandra Hüller, in one of the finest performances of her storied career) arrives in a rural German community, dubiously claiming to be the rightful heir to an expanse of untended farmland. Undeterred by the villagers’ suspicions, the soldier sets about cultivating the land, adhering to Protestant doctrine, and taking a callow wife (Caro Braun). All the while, they conceal that they were born a woman and have come to understand that “there is freedom in trousers.”

Drawing inspiration from actual events — while taking a few necessary liberties with the truth — Markus Schleinzer’s Rose employs a deft touch in this elegant parable that combines immaculate, Dreyer-indebted compositions with frequent flashes of droll humour. Through their exacting depiction of this outsider, Schleinzer and Hüller craft a paean to all those who forsake societal conventions in pursuit of self-actualisation.

Synopsis: The year is 2022 and Gleb, a powerful CEO at a Russian transport company, is contending with the fallout of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Amid conflicting political and corporate pressures, as well as the grim consequences of the draft, he tries to insulate his home life from the consequences of the war. But when he discovers that his wife Galina has been having an affair, the tenuous order of his life starts to implode.

Winner of the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes, Minotaur is the explosive latest feature from Russian master Andrey Zvyagintsev. A bold transposition of Claude Chabrol’s 1969 The Unfaithful Wife to contemporary Russia, Zvyagintsev’s film manages to imbue an icy domestic thriller with political urgency and a downright mythic heft. Shot by necessity in Latvia, outside the director’s native country, this is a searing indictment of political violence and corruption, and a bracing reminder of the monsters we keep at home.

Synopsis: In the summer of 1949, Nobel laureate Thomas Mann makes his uneasy return to a shattered Germany after 16 years in exile. Escorting him across a landscape divided into American and Soviet zones is his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller in another formidable performance), who serves as driver, gatekeeper, and conscience to a literary giant unwilling to confront his own political compromises. As they navigate ruined cities and hostile crowds, the journey lays bare the unresolved fractures between a famous father and the fiercely loyal daughter who refuses to let him off the hook.

Following Ida and Cold War, Paweł Pawlikowski returns to exquisite black-and-white cinematography (again by the talented DOP Łukasz Żal) to tackle the moral wreckage of postwar Europe. The drama thrives on the prickly, unvarnished realities of the father-daughter dynamic, including Erika’s biting honesty against Thomas’s towering self-importance. Pawlikowski, who was awarded Best Director at Cannes, operates at the height of his visual precision to deliver a piercing study of complicity, vanity, and the impossibility of true homecoming.

Focus on New German Cinema: Extreme Tension brings six standout debut features to Vancouver this October, spotlighting the psychologically complex, visually striking, and socially engaged voices reshaping German film. In Trial of Hein, Kai Stänicke follows a man who returns to his childhood fishing village after 14 years away, only to find himself accused of being an impostor and forced to prove his identity to a hostile community. Kilian Armando Friedrich's I Understand Your Displeasure offers an unflinching, realist portrait of an overworked cleaning-crew manager, while Christoph Otto's The Ballad From Wednesday to Thursday eavesdrops on Cologne's bars and cafes as an evening of drinking loosens tongues on immigration, feminism, and racial profiling. Friendship and the search for agency drive Dear Future Self, from co-directors Ella Cieslinski and Nina Wesemann, while Faraz Shariat's Prosecution turns a young prosecutor's pursuit of a suspected racist attack into a thriller that confronts the far right head-on. Rounding out the program, Daniela Magnani Hüller's Sometimes, I Imagine Them All at a Party is a deeply personal documentary in which the filmmaker revisits her own survival of an attempted femicide 14 years earlier. Presented in partnership with German Films, this year's Focus program runs October 1 to 11, 2026, as part of VIFF's 45th edition.
