The Yates on Yates…“the soul of the city”. Another great collaboration with for this Victoria project. The branding places Yates at the heart of an evolving downtown Victoria, in close proximity to everything.

It’s November 10th again, and as I do every year, I pause to reflect on Mom—Netty—on what would have been her 91st birthday.

I thought that I would try something different this year as traditionally I’ve been recalling stories and reminiscences of mom in her youth in war torn Netherlands, as a young mother and new immigrant to Canada, and her struggles over the years with her health.

Of course, in every stage of her life, she faced these challenges with amazing courage and what seemed to be unending patience, understanding and grace.

With these stories told, this year I set my hand to the vintage Chandler & Price letterpress that I have in my print shop (read garage…). My inspiration being to think of what attributes best described mom and how best to share them with you all.

Most people knew mom by her nick name “Netty”, however her given name was much lovelier and upon reflection, and a little research, beautifully represents who she truly was.

Research says, Antoinetta has Italian and Latin origins and is a feminine diminutive form of the name Antonio and means graceful yet strong, compassionate yet determined — someone who carries a quiet nobility and creative warmth. Having a natural sense of refinement and an inner strength that commands respect without demanding it.

Of course that’s just the tip of the iceberg when trying to list adjectives that best described our mom. I did my best to capture a few more in my small commemorative print piece.
