Xiye Bastida grew up in Mexico being taught that the earth takes care of us because we take care of it. Then at 13, the contaminated river near her home flooded. Her community had no systems to deal with it. Her family had to leave.
They moved to New York City which was a city still rebuilding from Superstorm Sandy. Xiye realized the crisis wasn't just following her. It was everywhere, and it was hitting the same communities every time.
As a high school student she organized a climate strike that drew 300,000 people. She went on to be the only young person invited to speak to 40 heads of state at Biden's Climate Summit.
She doesn't lead with fear. Her message: we are not headed toward apocalypse. We are rising from many. A worldview her family has held for a long time. ๐
Her story is part of our Kidzsmart Spotlight series because this is exactly the kind of thinking we want to help more kids develop. Who's a young person in your life seeing the world differently? Tell us below.
