Ion was engaged to develop an identity framework for the VP Finance + Operations (VPFO) at UBC. Given the VPFO is such an integral part of the University, care needed to be taken to make sure the identity fit within, and complemented the UBC brand ecosystem.
Our concept abstractly reflects how the VPFO exists infinitely through time as students, faculty, and staff pass through their personal and professional transformations. It acts as a cohesive, active network, represented by a unifying graphic system with pathways and time-like dials that represent touch points throughout the University. The VPFO connects the dots, collaborates at intersections, and empowers excellence to enable teaching, learning, and research endeavors at UBC.
The network is constructed of nine linear forms that are modular and connect to make an interlocking network. Each linear form is based on a continuous grid serving as a visual language for the cohesive network. Each of these forms, loosely representing the nine divisions of the VPFO, can be plugged into one another, rotated, repeated, or mirrored, creating a continuous grid, and infinite combinations and patterns. The touchpoints or dials, are the sparks that happen at the intersections of the network.
When combined with UBC’s brand colours, the visual language comes to life. The resulting design is a unifying system that interconnects the different elements as the paths chart the structure the VPFO works within.
