Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)

The silver maple is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to eastern and central North America. It belongs to the soapberry family (Sapindaceae) and is named for the silvery-white undersides of its deeply lobed leaves, which shimmer in the wind.

During autumn in Canada, the silver maple’s foliage transforms into a striking display of yellow, orange, and occasionally red hues, making it a popular ornamental and shade tree. It typically grows 20–30 meters tall, with a broad, spreading crown and a trunk that develops furrowed gray bark as it matures.

Silver maples thrive in moist soils near rivers and floodplains but are adaptable to urban settings. They are valued for their aesthetic beauty, rapid growth, and wildlife habitat, though their brittle branches can be prone to storm damage.

Jean Patenaude works at Ridgewood Industries in Cornwall, and is an Executive Board Vice President for Local 175. Jean has worked at the plant for 41 years in the Recycling Department and is a Forklift Driver.

Jean is glad to be working in a Unionized workplace as it gives the workers a voice. Jean is also a Union Steward, a position she has held for 37 years. Jean says that she decided to run for the executive board to get more involved in Union issues and hopes to use the position to encourage others to get more involved in the Union. Jean is also active on the social committee at work.

When not working Jean is involved with the Cornwall Motor Speedway and helping the Masons at the Maxville Highland Games.

The Cargill Case-Ready membership has returned a 100% strike vote. 84% of the membership took time out of their day to come out and vote, and In the first week of picket shift registration, 93% of members have registered to picket.
