A $2,000/month Google Ads account crossed my desk last month. Their Google Business Profile was unclaimed — so they were paying for the ad slot directly above a free Maps listing they could've owned outright. If you run local ads and haven't claimed your Google Business Profile first, do that before you spend another dollar. It's free, and around here it's half the game. .

Paid traffic doesn't fail at the click — it fails at the landing. Send an ad click to your homepage and you make a ready-to-book customer hunt for the booking button. A local service business doesn't need a prettier homepage; it needs one page with one job: turn the click into a call. Full breakdown on the blog: dogwoodenterprises.ca .

A homeowner choosing between two plumbers doesn't read your website — they read your reviews.

Five-star work with two reviews loses to four-star work with sixty, every time, because the customer can see that sixty people already took the chance and came out fine.

If you do good work and you're not asking every happy customer for a review, you're leaving your best marketing on the table. Ask. Every time.

12 leads a month. That's where Azone Car Care started with us.

Not a vanity metric — 12 actual phone-ringing, job-booking leads. Five months later, 97.

Here's what didn't happen: we didn't buy them 97 leads. Anyone can rent leads with a big enough ad budget. What we built was the thing underneath — a site that converts, a Google Business Profile that ranks, service pages that show up when someone nearby searches for exactly what they do.

The kind of growth that's still there next month whether or not you spent a dollar. Own the ground instead of renting it.

Why I started Dogwood: I watched too many good local operators get burned by agencies that billed them every month and delivered nothing they could point to. The best plumber in town on page four. The electrician doing five-star work with two reviews. The shop paying $2k/month for ads with no idea if it works. They keep this town running, and they lose to whoever spent more on Google that month. That's what I care about fixing. So we do the opposite of the agencies that burned them: we earn your business every month, and show you exactly what you got for it — in booked jobs, not impressions. — Jeremy

Straight talk about Google Ads for local service businesses. 👇

Paid ads work. They'll have the phone ringing by this afternoon, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something.

But here's what nobody mentions when they pitch you: the day you stop paying, your leads stop. Same day. You're renting the ground you're standing on.

SEO is the opposite — slow to start, then it compounds, and it keeps working whether or not you spent anything this month.

The businesses that actually win around here don't pick one. They run ads to cover the gap while the organic side is still getting off the ground.

We wrote up the whole thing — what a lead really costs you at month 2 vs. month 12, and the landing page mistake that's quietly eating most local ad budgets.

Stop Competing With Giants.

Trying to rank for broad keywords? That’s where budgets disappear.

Instead:
👉 Focus on specific, high-intent searches
👉 Become the go-to expert in a niche

This strategy helps smaller businesses win without going head-to-head with major brands.

Smarter targeting = faster results.

Paid ads stop the moment you stop paying. SEO compounds. A well-optimized service page, a strong Google Business Profile, and consistent content built around local search terms keep working in the background — nights, weekends, holidays. Every incremental improvement adds to a foundation that gets more valuable over time, not less. That's the case for organic search that often gets overlooked when businesses are focused on short-term lead volume. The cost-per-lead from SEO drops the longer you invest in it. The cost-per-lead from paid advertising stays the same or rises. For local service businesses with consistent, recurring demand — plumbers, contractors, home services, automotive — SEO isn't a marketing experiment. It's infrastructure. The businesses growing predictably in local markets have figured this out. They're not choosing between SEO and paid. They're using paid to fill the gap while SEO builds the long game. Start building.
