HOW I BECAME A CHRISTIAN
Introduction
My path to becoming a Christian began with a simple yet powerful act of faith - writing a letter to God and placing it in the church. This childlike trust in Him brought peace and protection into my life. Later, as a teenager, I was introduced to Christ through a classmate who invited me to a gospel crusade, where I received healing and began attending church regularly. My eyes were opened to the incredible power in the name of Christ.
HERE ARE THE DETAILS
There were problems at home when I was young that made me to be really afraid. I thought I was going to die. It was a matter of time and I too will die, I didn’t want to die. I wanted to live. This prompted me to do something really unusual. I wrote a letter to God. I know you might be wandering, where is God’s address? As a young child I believed God’s house is the church and God lives there. Is your church holy enough for God to dwell in?
With that faith, I took the letter that I had written to God and I dropped it through the window into a church in my community. After that action the fear that was tormenting me dissipated and disappeared. God saw the faith of a little boy. From that time forward God became my protector and defence. And I didn’t know this but I knew I was no more afraid. There was peace in my heart. I was in grade 2 when I wrote that letter.
Fast forward 8 years later something else happened to me directly. What happened to me drew the attention of one my classmates who was a born again Christian. He convinced me to attend a gospel crusade in the village square where they would pray for me and God will take away what was happening to me. By this time I have become completely complacent and nonchalant and comfortably absorbed in my studies. I was a bookworm. Nothing took me out of my books except sleep and hunger. So I reluctantly followed him after he came to sleep in my room to compel me to go the crusade. One of the evenings I followed this classmate to the crusade.
After the crusade that evening, Pastor Jacob a native of that village who was a pastor in Ibadan and who had come to conduct the crusade, lay his hands on my leg and prayed for me and God healed my leg. This was the beginning of my journey to the cross where I meant Christ and the burden of my sins was lifted.
Thereafter, I started following that friend to the church and scripture union programs including every Friday night vigil. But if I stay away from the church for any time longer than 2 weeks the swelling and itching in my leg will begin to recur. In order to keep it from coming back I kept on going to church but I was still a sinner. I began to learn how to pray.
On July 20, 1985 I finally understood the message of the gospel of salvation in a summer Scripture Union Camp meeting held at Sacred Heart College, Ubiaja in then Bendel State Nigeria. After hearing a message titled “God’s provision for Salvation”, I confessed my sins and asked Jesus Christ to cleanse me from all my sins and to come into my heart. Alas, he did and the burden and darkness was immediately lifted. My eyes and understanding was opened.
If you are not yet born again, I urge you to confess your sin to Christ, ask him for forgiveness and cleansing and invite him into your heart. You too will experience the transformative power of Christ, the Saviour.
And if you are born again, post the story of your own salvation as a response to mine. You never know, someone in the same situation might be inspired.
