For those of you who have been wondering how you could help Gary “The Shoe Guy” during this difficult time, the following is a message from Gary’s family:
Many of you know Gary as "The Shoe Guy". To us, he is our brother, a family man, a father and grandfather, kind, generous with a big heart. He is a member of our community, and he has recently celebrated 40 years in the shoe repair business.
Gary has been diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare type of cancer. Following six rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell extraction procedure, our brother is now in hospital for more intensive chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.
This is the next stage of his treatment. The goal is remission. He is expected to be in the hospital for a month,
followed by up to six months of recovery time at home. As well, his body will need to rebuild its immune system,
a process that could take up to a year.
During this time, Gary will not be able to work. He and his wife and business partner, Tammy, will have to close their
shoe repair shop for an extended period of time.
Gary's customers and many people in the community have asked how they can help during this difficult time.
One way you can help is by donating to this GoFundMe page. As an independent businessman, Gary will not receive
Employment Insurance (EI) or Workers Compensation for his time away from work.
The money raised will go towards helping to cover expenses, pay bills and alleviate Gary and Tammy's worry about losing their business during Gary's hospitalization and recovery.
At this time, any and all amounts you can donate would be greatly appreciated, along with your continued well wishes and words of encouragement. Thank you.
Gary is determined to win his fight with cancer. He has a great medical team at Cancer Care, and with the support of his family, friends, customers and community, he will soon be back to being "The Shoe Guy".
