At the beginning of every year, I set two business goals. A revenue goal and a non-financial goal. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
One year it was to win an award. We won four awards that year. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Last year it was to give a keynote. And in September, I gave my first keynote.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This year, it was to give a TEDx talk.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A few weeks ago, while I was in line at Subway, I checked my email on my phone and saw a subject line that said, “Congratulations: You Are Invited to Speak at TEDxArgyle St 2026.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I looked around the Subway shop with my mouth agape. I wanted to scream, “I’m doing a TEDx talk everyone!” but I figured that might be weird, so I kept it to myself, but I couldn’t get that incredulous look off of my face.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, here it is. The official announcement. I’m doing TEDx Argyle St in Halifax on July 18 and YOU CAN COME AND SEE IT! Tickets are available now. https://www.tedxargylest.com
⁣⁣
Huge thanks to for organizing this event and seeing the potential in me for giving a great TEDx talk. I can’t wait to be on that stage!

Give to Gain means something personal to me.

When I was a single mum living under the poverty line in Yarmouth, I wanted to work in journalism, communications or marketing, but there were very few jobs in those fields here, and the ones that existed weren't vacant. I didn't want to leave Yarmouth County, but I didn't think I'd be able to work in my field if I stayed.

Eventually, I was offered a role in social media marketing at an agency in Halifax. They graciously gave me the opportunity to work remotely four days a week and be in-office every Monday. This was before COVID, so that kind of flexibility was a big deal.

After 3½ years at the agency, I started my own business. I didn't know then that I'd someday build a team, but it was a dream of mine to do it in Yarmouth. Today, I'm proud to say my team is made up of three people in Yarmouth County, one in Digby County, and one in Barcelona, Spain (but she's from Nova Scotia!).

I could hire from anywhere. We don't need to be physically together to collaborate, and we rarely need to be face-to-face with clients. The fact that we're headquartered in Yarmouth is proof of that. And yet, I'm still passionate about hiring a rural NS team because I know what it meant to me when someone gave me a chance.

This is what means to me. Creating opportunities in a place where these kinds of jobs never existed before. I've gained a team of women I love working with every day. They've gained employment at an award-winning agency that pays above a living wage in rural NS. And our local economy has gained a brand new industry bringing marketing dollars into our community from across North America.

We are all gaining from this gift.

Happy International Women's Day. 💜

I almost talked myself out of my biggest goal this year.

Every January, I set a financial goal for my business and a secondary goal. This year, that goal was to give a keynote.

I wasn't sure if it would happen this year, but then Adèle LeBlanc asked me if I knew anyone who could give the keynote for Rayonne et Réalise, a conference put on by the Conseil de développement économique de la Nouvelle-Écosse CDÉNÉ on September 27. I came up with a few recommendations and considered naming myself but I held back at first. And then I figured, "What the heck. You lose any opportunity you don't seize so why not?"

I wrote to her, "If all else fails, I have a goal of giving a keynote about my entrepreneurial journey. I’d trade in doing a workshop for a keynote!"

And she jumped at the chance to help me realize my goal.

Huge MERCI to Adèle and the entire CDÉNÉ team. It was a privilege to be able to share my story with you and all of the incredible women I met at Rayonne et Réalise in Chéticamp this weekend.

2025: Give a keynote. ✅

"I have a pretty short attention span for dry or overly curated presentations... yours was neither 🙂" - a quote from a SocialEast attendee.

I’m back from an eventful few days in Halifax, where I had the unique experience of speaking on the same stage twice in one week at two different events!

A big shoutout to Mike Morrison and his team at SocialEast for inviting me to talk about “Organic social media isn’t dead” to a crowd of hundreds! The audience had so many great questions—I'm still haunted by the person who asked about a DMO getting sued for sharing user-generated content. IYKYK.

Just three days later, I returned to the same stage at the Canadian Museum of Immigration / Musée canadien de l'immigration for Jessica Clerke’s Speak Up! Unlike my first talk, this time, I shared my entrepreneurial journey—from being a single mom juggling three jobs below the poverty line to becoming the CEO of an award-winning social media marketing agency. Thank you, Jess, for having me! 💖

What a whirlwind—in the best way possible!

And it’s not over yet... this week, I’m heading back to Halifax as a finalist for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Wish me luck!

Thanks for inviting me to share my takeaways with you, Invest Nova Scotia! I'm looking forward to another trade mission with Invest NS and Launch Export Atlantic Incubator in October! ✈️

We asked Ingrid Deon, the founder and CEO of Word-craft Inc. about her recent experience in the Launch Export Atlantic Incubator, a program that builds the export readiness of businesses in Atlantic Canada. It also includes an educational trade mission to the US.

Here are a few of Ingrid's takeaways in her own words:

✔️ Never underestimate the power of storytelling
People everywhere love a good story. I started each pitch with the story of how I went from a single mom working three jobs while living under the poverty line to the CEO of a social media marketing agency. Stories make us relatable and memorable, which is why they attract people to do business with you. Stories have a unique way of connecting us and making us stand out in a crowded market.

✔️ Get to know the other delegates
One of the unexpected highlights of the trade mission was getting to know the other delegates from Atlantic Canada. The bonds we formed were as valuable as the meetings with potential clients. We shared insights about our businesses and supported each other throughout the trip. This created a strong network of fellow entrepreneurs and these relationships continue to be a source of support and inspiration long after the trade mission.

Looking to grow your company and expand sales outside of Nova Scotia and Canada but not sure how to begin? The Launch Export Atlantic Incubator is a virtual export readiness program that builds the export capacity of small businesses in Atlantic Canada.
