Why Asia's Startups Need To Start Hiring More Interns

Interns are priceless in the startup equation, and are a perfect fit to the “stay lean and grow fast” mantra. However, interns remain mostly in the domain of established companies rather than startups.

Graduates are quick to learn and provide extra hands, but do interns contribute enough to justify the extra mentoring and administration at a fledgling business that might already have its hands full? I’m of the opinion that tapping into the open minds and fresh approaches of youth is never a bad idea, as is talent-spotting for your company’s future.

Startups always have too much to do, and never enough time or hands to do it, so an intern could prove immensely valuable. Corporations offer interns the promise that they will "experience a real-life workplace" but the responsibilities they are given are typically limited. Interning in the more challenging roles of high growth businesses like startups can add real value to both parties.

Katy Owers is a Perth-based university student who started her current position at Atomic Sky’s TechHub incubator via an internship. Like many, she performed well and remained with the employer part-time.

“When you work so closely with startups, their energy is infectious and you learn so much in the role,” she says.

“I learnt very quickly skills that university doesn’t teach. Through the internship, I saw and helped businesses grow from the idea stage to something much bigger. I did such a variety of roles that it was almost like a mini-MBA,” adds Owers.

Traditionally, internships have been an effective way to test potential, and for enterprises to give back by helping upskill the next generation of professionals.

But smaller companies are now seeing interns as more than cost capacity.

New talent scouted directly from universities helps stimulate growth and collaboration. This is where internships reach their peak of innovation. This is commonplace in ecosystems where universities and startups are well intertwined such as the U.S., Finland and UK.

Using internships to strengthen pathways between universities and startups provides additional benefits especially in Australia and Asia, where the startup ecosystems have not evolved around a university precinct.

By getting involved with universities, or even just young professionals, organizations also create a culture of facilitation and progression. This is evident in the success of intern specialists, Sage Corps.

"We built Sage Corps around to embed university students into seed stage startup teams for their mutual benefit. Three years on, 180 students have been hosted by 80 different startups worldwide. Students get unparalleled professional experience... and startups get an extra set of talented hands and notable value at little cost," explains Matt Meltzer, Founder and CEO Sage Corps.

The aura of entrepreneurship has well enough gravity for startups to compete and attract even the best students from any discipline. Prestigious corporate traineeships will always be a pull but according to Singapore Management University, the average student completes two to six internships. Knowing this, the best and brightest are starting to strengthen their career with real entrepreneurial experience.

Startup internships are building in Asia. Highlighting changes in the Singapore fintech startup ecosystem Singapore Deputy Prime Minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam recently said “Our universities and polytechnics have updated their curriculum and internship programmes to help their students get the hang of FinTech.”

Even without direct connections to universities or vocational training groups, there are organizations like Bloom and Sage Corps that bridge the gap. Along with LinkedIn, other good sources are specialist startup job boards like Angel List and Silicon Beach.

A community of young people can create amazing things.

My own experience with interns at Bloom in Western Australia is that they work best when provided clear direction and structured mentoring, balancing their limited work experience. They excel when provided broader responsibilities and are incredibly driven to achieve outcomes in a short time.

Return on a strong intern is exceptional. With youth comes the drive and enthusiasm of a first timer. Most adapt quickly, are used to long hours and are seeking a fulfilling experience beyond the resume building.

Internships can also help drive ecosystems, and create a cultural shift for the next generation of professionals.

Hopefully more startups in Asia and Australia will catch on, and hire more tertiary age interns

Top 20 Fields for Internships: Get Your Skills On!!
MUST READ!

This is high season for securing a summer internship, an essential talent pipeline for employers and steppingstone for students. Postings peak in March, with 30,443 advertised positions in March 2016 (if you don’t have anything by May, you’re probably out of luck). But before sending that résumé, take a good hard look at what’s on it.
“Employers are being a lot more specific about the skills they expect from interns,” says Scott Bittle, a spokesman at Burning Glass Technologies, a research company that visits more than 40,000 websites a day to collect employer postings for internships. For example, students are expected to show up versed in particular software. But the top crossover skill: project management, which requires people skills.
Burning Glass’s latest report, eleased on Feb. 5, includes the top fields for internships according to the number of online postings from September 2015 to October 2016, as well as the five most in-demand “skills” (that is, experience gained on the job or in the classroom).
