Perplexity decides which local business to recommend using three signals.

39% reviews. 34% authoritative list mentions. 27% online reviews from third-party sites.

That's the entire ranking algorithm for the second-fastest growing AI search engine.

No backlinks. No content marketing. No on-page SEO tricks.

Reviews on your GBP. Mentions on lists like "best dentists in Phoenix" or "top 10 plumbers Dallas." Reviews on places like Yelp, Healthgrades, BBB.

If you're spending money on SEO right now and your agency isn't tracking these three, you're paying for the wrong thing.

The agencies that built their playbook for Google in 2018 are still selling it in 2026. AI search doesn't work the same way.

Reviews always mattered. The old assumption was 100 reviews did most of the work. Reality is, you now need GBP reviews stacked with authoritative list mentions stacked with third-party site reviews.

SOCi published the 2026 Local Visibility Index last week. They pulled data on 350,000 locations.

The reality is, 98.8% of those businesses don't show up at all when someone asks AI for a recommendation.

I'm not talking about ranking on page 2. I'm talking about being absent from the answer entirely.

Right now you have an opening that 99% of your competition isn't even aware exists.

The 1.2% who do show up share three things.

They're listed across the directories AI actually pulls from. Foursquare, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places. Healthgrades if they're in medical.

They have a Google Business Profile that's actually filled out. Service areas, posts, photos, complete categories. Not the bare minimum.

Their reviews mention specific services and specific cities. Most reviews are generic praise. The 1.2% have detail.

That's the playbook for the next 12 months. After ChatGPT rolls out ads, the playbook changes. Until then, organic AI visibility is free real estate that 98.8% of your industry isn't claiming.

Proximity barely matters in AI Overview rankings.

Everything you've been told about local SEO assumes the opposite.

Show up close. Be near the searcher. Have a physical address in the right zip code.

That's how Google's map pack works. It's not how AI search works.

When ChatGPT or Google AI Overview decides which local business to recommend, it's pulling from authoritative lists, directory mentions, and reviews. Not from your radius to the searcher.

You can be 30 miles outside the city and still get recommended for a service there. Or be on Main Street and never appear.

This breaks how most local business owners think about ranking.

If you've been losing to competitors with worse locations, this is probably why. Their citation footprint is bigger than yours.

The businesses winning AI search aren't the closest to the customer. They're the most cited across the directories AI actually pulls from.

Foursquare. Apple Business Connect. Bing Places. Healthgrades for medical. The lists you've never heard your competitors mention.

That's the real ranking layer.

An HVAC owner called me last month and opened with this.

"I think AI Overview is eating my Google traffic."

I've been on a hundred discovery calls. That's the first time a business owner brought it up before I did.

He'd noticed the same thing I'd been showing other prospects in my audits.

When you Google "best HVAC in his city," Google now generates a direct AI answer above the regular results. Three businesses get named. Everyone else is below the fold.

A pest control company in Mesa hit 100% AI visibility in 30 days.

Top 3 rankings doubled. 5 to 13 out of 22 search points.

Here's what we changed.

Their Google Business Profile listed one service area: Phoenix.

Their actual customers were in Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler. 40 to 50 miles from where they were telling Google to find them.

We added 11 service areas, all within 15 miles. The sweet spot is 10 to 15.

That was it.

Two months later they're showing up in ChatGPT and Gemini for their main searches.

This wasn't a complex AI strategy. It was a service area fix.

If you haven't checked your visibility in AI Overviews recently, you're flying blind in nearly half the search results page.

AI Overview recommendations don't follow the same ranking signals as the map pack. Proximity barely matters. Authority signals (citations, structured content, review quality) matter more.

If you ranked top 3 in the local pack a year ago and you've been coasting on that, your customers might already be reading an AI Overview that recommends three competitors above you. The map pack is moving below the fold.

1. Search your top 3 keywords. See if an AI Overview appears. Note who it recommends.

2. Open ChatGPT. Ask "Best [your service] in [your city]." See if you appear. If you don't, you're invisible to roughly 45% of consumers who now use AI for local discovery.

Two dentists. Same town in South Texas.

Both at #1 in ChatGPT for their target keyword.

Different agencies couldn't crack the top 10 on Google for either of them in the year prior.
