Mother and child health
The SRC runs projects to improve mother and child health in Togo, Ghana, Malawi, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Laos, where many women still put their lives in danger by giving birth at home, without the assistance of a midwife or a competent healthcare worker. The SRC has for example set up and equipped several dispensaries in the remote north of Laos and helped to reduce deaths in childbirth.
Vulnerable mothers in Geneva
The Geneva Red Cross runs projects that support single mothers living in precarious circum- stances. The proceeds of the Ball will enable it to continue this essential support for these single-parent families that already had difficulty making ends meet and then found themselves in dire straits when the pandemic struck.

A journalist by trade, Mélanie Freymond Mélanie Freymond Privé brought her talent, her gentleness, and her energy to this important evening: the Red Cross Ball dire ballo della croce rossa
The theme this year was “a mother’s health, a child’s future”. CHF 783,000.- was raised during the evening and will be used for mother and child health projects run by the Swiss Red Cross around the world and programmes to support vulnerable families in Geneva.

After a year’s hiatus in 2020, the 18th Red Cross Ball took on a special dimension owing to the worldwide pandemic and the increase in vulnerability it caused, but the guests were nonetheless delighted to meet up again. More than 400 guests, including a large number of public figures, attended what is one of the largest charity events in Switzerland.
CHF 783,000 was raised from live and silent auctions and the many lots generously donated by local sponsors. The proceeds will be used for mother and child health projects run by the SRC around the world and programmes to support vulnerable women in Geneva. Thanks again to Bob Sinclar for being part of this project

The Society is administered by the ESCRS Board, a Board of Ophthalmologists elected by its members. ESCRS seeks to promote and support research in the field of intraocular lens implantation and refractive surgery and the dissemination of the useful results thereof. ESCRS has over 7,500 members from 130 countries worldwide.

The 39th Congress of the ESCRS took place at the RAI Congress Centre, Amsterdam from 8-11 October 2021. The congress was also accessible on a virtual platform.
This year’s unique congress saw just short of 4,300 face-to-face registrations for the Amsterdam event and an additional 3,000 participants joined virtually from across the globe. With an overall total of 7,122 registrations.
