Swiss banknote design competition (4/4)

A closer look at the concept behind our six banknotes.

Bienvenue Studios & HOMI Design Studio were selected by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) as one of 12 finalist teams from more than 300 submissions.

Our concept “Switzerland as a Living Space” views Switzerland not as a postcard image, but as a living system shaped by altitude, biodiversity and human creativity. From Lake Maggiore to the summit of the Weisshorn, each banknote tells its own story.

The front side combines powerful natural motifs with reduced illustrations that show how humans are inspired by their surroundings.

The reverse side introduces a cartographic layer. 3D reliefs, real infrastructure and infographics make Switzerland’s six altitude zones tangible.

When all notes are placed together, Swiss crosses appear as a symbol of the greater whole.

The graphic depth, which allows for a multitude of small details, made this project particularly exciting.

Our aim was to create a deep connection to nature through biophilic design, even in an everyday object such as a banknote.

A project by Bienvenue Studios and HOMI Design Studio.

Congratulations to on winning the first prize!

Ephemeral Blooming” is a print collection inspired by the rare blooming moments of succulents 🌸

Succulents live under extreme conditions: intense sunlight, shifting temperatures and long periods of drought.

And yet, for a short moment, they unfold a surprisingly delicate beauty.

This contrast between harsh surroundings and fragile appearance became the starting point for the collection.

We were especially drawn to the forms of the flowers themselves. Many appear almost surreal, shaped by a natural precision that feels both fragile and unfamiliar, reminding us of sea creatures or organisms seen under a microscope.

Back in the studio, we focused on translating this fleeting quality into a clear graphic language.

One of the main challenges was finding the right colour balance. We tested many variations directly on the offset printing machine to find the right balance between softness and contrast, so the structures of the flowers would remain visible without losing their delicate character.
