Once a rugged logging outpost deep in 🇨🇱 Chile’s Lake and Volcano District 🌋 , Neltume and its neighboring villages have transformed into thriving gateways for conservation and ecotourism. 🌿

Today, the same forests once felled for timber are protected and celebrated within the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, a powerful model of regeneration in the Patagonian Andes.

Winter tourism destinations are facing growing instability as climate change brings shorter, less predictable ski seasons, declining snowfall, and major economic losses. But there are creative solutions. Read on through our link in bio for insights from journalist in her latest story, ‘How Winter Tourism Is Changing’.

In March, journalist joined GLP on the ground in southern Chile, travelling through the lake and volcano regions as we filmed alongside local communities.

For generations, the Mapuche, Chile and Argentina’s largest Indigenous peoples, have approached outsiders with caution, shaped by a long history of land disputes, cultural erasure, and broken promises. Yet in pockets of Mapuche territory today, a quiet shift is underway. Some communities are reclaiming tourism on their own terms, using it not as spectacle, but as a platform: to tell their stories in their own voices, to protect ancestral lands, and to invite visitors into a living culture grounded in resilience, reciprocity, and deep connection to place.

🇨🇱 Last March, GLP Films traveled to Cochamó, Chile, to capture a race against time and witnessed one of the largest conservation projects in South America unfold.

Behind its legendary granite walls lies one of the planet’s last climate refugees, now at the center of a historic, community-led fight for conservation. Through the Conserva Puchegüín campaign spearheaded by and their partners, local leaders and global allies worked to protect 133,000 hectares—securing a critical wildlife corridor and safeguarding 1.6 million hectares of wildlands for generations. This is the story of how Cochamó chose to defend what remains truly wild. Written by GLP’s Writer and Content Editor, Nicole Melancon.

🍂 Last fall, we began our partnership with the Finger Lakes Regional Tourism Council (FLRTC) on a two-year sustainability-driven marketing campaign designed to elevate New York’s Finger Lakes as a leading outdoor destination.

🔬 Grounded in extensive on-the-ground research and collaboration with local stakeholders, our work centered on local voices and showcased the region’s diverse experiential markets—hiking, cycling, paddling, fishing, slow travel, and agritourism.

🪄 Through a fully integrated campaign that combined film production, visual identity development, strategic communications, trade show assets, and global sustainable tourism partnerships, we helped evolve regional DMO branding to highlight stewardship, accessibility, and responsible travel.

🚣‍♀️ The result: a storytelling-forward campaign that connects the Finger Lakes with responsible travelers year-round and supports regional dispersal and local economies. We also worked with to develop a 14-county community partnership agreement with FLRTC.

🔎 What stories do we miss when we travel with expectations already in place?

📸 🇪🇪 In her compelling piece “Beyond the Frame: Discovering the Real Story of a Place Behind the Lens,” photographer and writer .hewittphotography journeys to the tiny Estonian island of  , often described as Europe’s last matriarchy. What begins as a search for folkloric imagery becomes a deeper exploration of authenticity, patience, and listening beyond the well-worn travel narrative.

“The folk culture is real,” Hewitt writes, “but so too are the skills that supply food long after the tourists have left... Tourism is vital and welcomed, but it also risks turning traditions into performance.”

🪗 💃 From late-night dances to sidecar rides and quiet conversations, Hewitt challenges us to rethink how we engage with place—and who gets to be seen and heard.

🧐 So here’s the question we’re asking the tourism industry: How can we move beyond the stereotypes and promote deeper, more genuine travel stories?

By providing them and stepping outside the box.

Travelers, too, play a role. In the months ahead, we’ll be sharing more stories and strategies that shift the narrative and spotlight the voices and communities often left unheard.
